Getting a pickup truck

Had a 78 SR5 that had almost 500k on it when I got rid of it. Now my Ranger has 200k on it. Might depend on how they're taken care of to determine how long they last.

MAYBE it's just good luck but of the new vehicles I've boughten none have ever really had problems. First Nissan pickup I bought the front brakes started to vibrate, they fixed with no problems and it never reoccured. My 02 Frontier had a loose cab mount that was fixed at the dealer the day after I brought it home.....94 Saturn never saw a shop until about 120,000 miles and only for what ended up being a sensor in the cooling system that cost hardly anything.......I've had three Saturns that have never seen a dealers shop. I'm pretty responsible in that I keep up on maintenance and can do some general repairs (at least on some older cars/trucks, don't belts, hoses, alternator's, starters etc...no internal engine work).
My worst luck has been with freaking TIRES....could have set up a tire shop in my garage with the number of tires I've had to replace on both car, truck, trailer and ATV's.....

Tires and filters, I should have bought stock in some of those companies.

hear ya on that. Had two flats, in two weeks. Both on Thursday. Seriously considered not working on Thursday anymore.>>>>>>>>
Past year:
Replaced on tire on my 89 F150 with spare, just this spring had to replace all four tires.
Brand new Saturn, 2,000 miles, blow out on the freeway....$150 tire.
Bought a trailer, both tires seperated bringing it home, replaced both.
Had a PT Cruiser, slow leaks in three tires, three cans of slime later kinda fixed it.
ATV's:
Brand new Rincon......maybe 6 hours, had to replace both front tires, multiple plugs in each.
Outlander 330, replaced both front tires, had multiple plugs in each, on rear had a nail in it, left it alone never leaked.

I about crapped when I bought a new tire for the trailer. Thankfully, haven't had to buy any more for it, yet. Still, a lot cheaper than the tires on the motorhome we had.

My dad needs all 4 new tires on his truck, were talking $600 for new tires, but hell I'd say he got his moneys worth outa his stock tires, 51,500 miles off the stock BFG's on a 1 ton truck.

I've been thinking along similar lines, how great it would be to have a truck bed to haul one quad, but also be able to tow when you need to. I pull a trailer and two quads usually although I'm rigging my trailer to take three. I think that totals up to about 3000 lbs, which is all your S10 is rated with a 4 cylinder.
I use a 94 Honda Passport V6, rated at 4500, and it has to drop a gear on the hills, but keeps on pulling. I've been thinking about a Ranger with a V6, with a similar tow capacity, which I think might be able to haul one in the back as well as tow 3 quads. But still get closer to 20 mpg unloaded. Maybe I'm dreaming. But what I'm saying is think about the max it will tow. If you're sure you'll "never" need to tow more than a second quad, then the 4 cylinder sounds good. But if you might want to tow more than 3000 (which includes whatever load, including people, that's in your truck), you may want to think about a V6.
Ford Ranger is the same as a Mazda, since 1994 I think. No, Mazda isn't Toyota, but you don't have to pay some overblown price for the Toyota name, either. Sure, I'd rather have a Toyota truck, but for twice the price?

Ford Rangers are dirt cheap and tuff. The Vulcan 3.0 liter is okay, the 2.3liter is low on power but will last 300K easy. The 4.0 liter is a German engineered V6 that flat out hauls the mail. The 4.0 will get 20 mpg in 2WD versions only.
Take 2-3 mpg off all these listed engines when going to a 4WD model.
If I had 7K or less to spend on a truck I'd buy a used Chevy full sized with the 4.3 V6 this will get you 20+ mpg down the highway in standard cab 4WD versions. The five speeds are a little weak but you don't have the HP/TQ to hurt them.
Fords and Dodges always get the worst gas milage out of the big Tree.
