The first question is; "What kind of car do YOU drive?"

IF you have a truck, put one ATV in the back and buy a 5' x 8' single axle with a ramp.

IF you have a mid size car - you are in trouble. The average car has a towing capacity of 1000 lbs. So that means one 600 lb machine and a 400 lb trailer.

IF you continue this logic, two ATVs @ 600lbs = 1200 lbs plus the Bigger trailer @ 600 lbs = 1800lbs... you are illegal now and DANGEROUS!

So; What kind of ATVs are we looking at, and what vehicle are you driving?

Last year I was faced with the same question, I decided on buying two trailers one for each car. It sounds odd but it was cheaper than the other options.

I bought a 6x12 trailer with a fold down rear gate.Thinking i could haul 2 quads.(07 rancher,06 foreman)WRONG.. I half to turn the rancher side ways on the frnt and can drive the foreman onto the rear, with a few inches or room left between the two.If your going to haul two pretty big size quads i would go with a 5x 14 0r 6x 14..Just my 2 cents..

It would either be pulled behind our motorhome or a mercury mountaineer and im positive the motorhome can pull over a thousand and i think the mountaineer can too.

I did some quick research on your mercury mountaineer and it can tow 3500 pounds so it all depends on what size trailer you want... you probably have enough towing capacity for about 3 or 4 quads

I had a 5x10 trailer I used to use. Was just a flat bed, no rails. Put one on the front sideways, and drove the other straight up the back. Never had any problems.

I did tow it behind our motorhome, and it was tricky backing up with it since it was so short.

Just make sure that the wheel base on the one going sideways is under 5 feet.

BTW, I had a person that makes several different trailers make my 5x10 for 400 bucks. Only complaint was he put used tires on it. For under 100 bucks, I got new ones. Used the trailer for 4 years, and sold it to my nephew who is still using it.

Ok I had a look at the Specs on the Mountaineer - NICE SUV!

With the 3500 lbs towing capacity you should* be good to tow two machines and a trailer. I would recommend a trailer that is about 6 x 14' WITH a double axle. Be sure to have the first ATV go on from a side ramp and the second from the back. I like to have lots of tie downs to make sure nothing moves as I travel down those long roads...

The second axle will help spread out the weight but it makes it a little harder to turn. Another option that I would recommend is electric brakes. By the time that you are fully loaded you will have close to 2000 lbs pushing your SUV... you will appreciate the extra stopping power.

The last thing that I will suggest is that you go and visit your car dealer to confirm the details of the rated towing capacity. A buddy of mine had a YUKON that he used to tow his boat - long story- but he destroyed his transmission and the warranty was declared VOID.

*After all was said and done, the advertised towing capacity was a high number (I Don't know how much), but this included the weight of the passengers PLUS the weight of the car PLUS the luggage. Anything left over was the safe weight that the trailer could be. Needless to say the boat exceeded the magic number and he had to pay to replace the tranny.

SO... do your homework and ask the dealer a lot of questions.
