4 Quads & Camping-How do y'all do it?
#1
We're a family of four with two large Hondas, one Raptor & a baby Quad for our 6 year old Princess. We've been tent camping but are ready to move up into the world of RV's -- how do you all make the logistics work with four quads - on a budget? We've looked at the Scorpion and the high end enclosed trailers but can't seem to find anything that'll work for all of us and our pocketbook! We live in MT so most of our trips involve overnighters....
Thanks for any input!

Welcome to the forums 4xFamily.
I can fit 3 adult sized (kfx400, trail blazer 250, 325 trail boss) and a small kids quad in our Weekend Warrior FK2100. They have to be loaded sideways, so that takes a little extra muscle. And the kids quad is actually on the kitchen floor, but they still all fit and stay in place.

Welcome to the forum! If I were you I would wait this year out till the end of the camping season you will then be able to find allot of used and new trailers heavily discounted and a lot of varity to choose from. Don't worry you will find someting that will fit your need as there are allot of diff manufacturers of trailers you just might need to take a road trip out of state to get a good deal on one esp if you are living in MT as I used to live ther myself {Missoula}, there is just not as many people to find used trilers from like her in CO or dessert riders in CA.

I am kinda in the same situation. I have a good sized Open trailer to tow my 4 quads with a jeep or a 6 cyl. explorer. Neither tow vehical is large enough for pulling a big toy hauler. I don't have anywhere to store a toy hauler either. I do have a little toyota pickup that I only use for going to the dump or getting a load of dirt etc. and I think I am going to replace it with a big f-250 or similar truck. Then get a slide in camper for it. Lots of big trucks for sale cheap these days. Gas mileage not a concern for me as it won't be driven very often. I can still use it as a truck when I need to or put the camper in when I need that and tow the quad trailer. I also looked at used motor homes that could tow my trailer. For me though parking area is limited and I would have to get rid of my toyota to make room. I need a truck once in a while. Which brings me back to the f-250 or maybey a dually.

Got lucky on my toy hauler. Was at an rv/trailer dealer and they just happened to take the one I bought in on a trade. Guy bought it, used it 4 times and decided he wanted something bigger. So it was basically a new trailer, but cost 6k less than the ones like it that were new.
And since it's a super lite, I can still use the 1/2 ton to pull it.
Storage was kind of a problem. The tongue sticks out 9" over the sidewalk, and someone complained. But the city said I could park it at an angle, and as long as the wheels were on concrete and it wasn't over the sidewalk, it was legal.
When we had the 34' rv, I had to pay 45 bucks a month for storage.

The logistics are tough - with the best ideas being expensive ones! Storage isn't really an issue for us as we have plenty of land.....we're just not that keen on spending $20,000-$30,000 on a pretty trailer we intend to put plenty of 'miles' on.....and we'd probably end up needing something bigger than our 1/2 ton truck to pull all the weight, especially since Montanans are supposed to be kinda rough and tumble - not the Grandpa-Sunday drivers motoring along with a line of 15 angry cars in back! I love the Scorpion idea - a toy hauler with a pop-up tent/shelter - but I can't seem to find one that fits 4 quads.
Scooter - you really love your toy hauler?
Thanks all for your ideas - and welcome notes - this is a great site!

Hi all. I'm in the same boat as 4xFamily. Accept, my problem is figuring out what toy hauler I can tow with my 2007 Nissan Pathfinder SE 4x4. Its max is 6000 (with the weight distribution hitch). It seems like all the toy haulers start at about 3800 pounds dry weight. Add 4 Honda 250 quads, gas, water, family & food for a day, and I'm overweight. I need something that is about 3200 pounds dry weight. Anybody hear of anything like that out there? Suggestions?

Could you get just a normal 5th wheel put a hitch on the back and pull a trailer big enough to fit you wheelers on? I know them toy haulers are nice but darn expensive. You can get a pretty nice 5th wheel for about $10000 were i live.

That's what we did, but we got a new 5thW. 1 ton dually, 5th wheel, then the trailer with wheelers on it. Ain't pretty or small by any means but worth it for the fun we have.

I like the idea of a small car hauler, liek say 20ftx8.5ft and add bunks, storage and ac. Not sure what it would weigh so maybe to much for a 1/2 ton truck with lots of ATVs in it. Now I use my dads 16ft trailer. Once we get there we put the quads outside set a window ac in the back with plastic sheeting to seal the rest of the doorway and sleep in it on mats.
