Triton ATV88 2 place trailer
#1
Greetings,
I'm considering buying this trailer but not sure if it's big enough for a Polaris Sportsman 500 and a Polaris X2. Comparing the dimensions of the trailer to the dimensions of the ATV's I'm not sure.
Does anyone out there have this trailer and use it for Polaris Sportsmans? If so any issues as far as fitting them?
I'm also open to other trailer suggestions.
Thanks in advance,
Joe

I have this trailer and use it with a Sportsman 500 Touring and a 850XP. It works, the machines hang over the trailer but the tires are well within the trailer. It does make it a bit hard to tie down, but some time and an ample selection of straps and you will get that figured out. I got a great deal on mine as it was a repo, if I was ordering one I probably would have gotten a bigger one that loads front to back not crossways. I have plenty of tow vehicle, and I always take the windshields off the machines when they are loaded crossways, and this gets to be a pita.
Good luck.

From its specs, it looks like a good lightweight trailer designed for two ATV's. My only comment is that it should probably only be used for short hauls on smooth roads.
The manufacturer says that it's cargo capacity is 1520 pounds. Polaris 850 dry weight 774 plus Polaris 500 Touring dry weight is 740 plus 66 pounds of gas plus oil & water is over 1580 pounds. That means you are overweight and warranty could be voided. Also, it has no brakes! 1/2 & 3/4 T trucks can handle that weight but a car or lite truck could have problems in emergency stops or slick roads.
Secondly, the 1/2 plywood decking material probably needs to be kept sealed with a wood sealer even though it says it's treated lumber. Plywood doesn't handle moisture very well so it should be stored inside when not in use.
Again, I think it will do great for short trips but I would want something more substantial if I was hauling $15,000 of ATV's on a 500 mile trip.

I really like the Triton trailers, but a couple issues with them as well. They don't come with enough capacity generally, and the owners don't seem to want to budge on raising the limits. They do have some heavy duty models on their web page under the section where you can pull down their brochures. THESE trailers have increased load capacity that fall more in line with the heavy ATVs.
Last, before youmake your purchae, make sure you won't eventually need something bigger for additional machines. You can always grow into a bigger trailer, but if you outgrow a small one, you have to spend a lot more money replacing it instead of just buying the bogger one now and spending a lot less money doing it.

I went through this exact same situation back in August and went with the suggestion from one of the forum members. The ATV trailer in question to me wasn't going to work so I went with a Triton snowmobile trailer. Link below to the model. There were 3 models to choose from at the time and I went with the Elite series. Bigger tires, thicker plywood and more capacity. Couldn't be happier. I drive both machine right up on it from the back. There is about 10-12" between the 2 when up on the trailer. I have attempted to attach some pics so show how they fit.

I agree with the above comments about weight capacity being an issue. Add that to the fact the X2 will be hanging out over the edge quite a bit makes me think it might not be a good choice. I ended up going with a 101"x12' snowmobile trailer that has leaf springs with a decent rating. Our ATP and X2 (both about 93" long) fit nicely with enough room for a full size machine on the rear. We usually load ours straight forward, side by side, and the last one sideways. The nice thing about the snowmobile trailer is that it is 101" so you have an extra 5" of width to allow a little space between the machines.

I have the 3 place SL12 Triton 12 foot. I love the extra 4 feet if you need to haul a extra toy or gear. You can load 3 Sportsman's sideways or 1 Sportsman and a RZR. I have the one with ramps but my buddy has the same with the pull out ramp. I would think the X2 would fit sideways on the trailer with out the side ramps. They pull like a dream and do not stick out as much as a snowmobile trailer.

I had a Cargopro ATV trailer that pulled like a dream but it was only 89" or so wide. It had the hinged ramps like Thor's trailer. My gripe with that was that the ramps would rub up against the plastics on the front and rear of our quads. We have an Polaris ATP 500 and an X2 500. Both are about 93" long. Just make sure what you get doesn't have these kinds of issues.

I have the exact same trailer as Thor, and I love it. I bought it when we first got into atv'ing, back in late 2001. It's made numerous trips from Michigan down through the mountains of Tennessee and now all over WV mountains too. I'd imagine it's got over 20,000 miles on it. I finally replaced the tires and one wheel kit, this past summer. Everything on it is still in good shape, the wood, wires etc...we've hauled as much as 3 Sportsman 500's at a time on it, and it does pull and track fantastically.
It's plenty heavy duty enough for what you wanna do with it.
