Does anyone out here have an opinion on which winches to stay away from? Looks to me like there are alot of WARN's and SUPERWINCH's out there. WARN seems to me to be the best but I would appreciate hearing from your experiences.

Thanks

kmicha3,

I have been using the superwinch 2000lb stall rating for about 4 - 5 years, and it has been awesome... especially pulling out myself and pulling out other quads and helping us do other odd jobs such as lifting the dock for changing water levels, etc. It has gone through everything you could imagine... snow, mud, rain, etc... and I have not had any problems, but I make sure it is well taken care of by adding silicon based grease around the wheel and kept the electrical connections clean at all times.

P.S. I bought the winch for 150 bucks at a flea market (unopened) around 10 years ago. It has served its purpose and definitely worth every cent I spent...

I bought a Superwinch 1500lb last fall and it works great. If you get the Warn buy the switch kit from Superwinch, you will like it better. The Warn switch is a rotary and has to be mounted on the rack, the Superwinch is a rocker and can be mounted on your handle bars next to your left hand. I use mine for plowing in the winter and can operate it with my left hand and drive at the same time. I think the Warn is a better built winch, but it is hard to pass on the price of the Superwich (watch for Kmart sales flyers, they carry them and sell them for 149.99 and put them on sale for 129.99!). You need to buy a mount, look around, my buddies 450 honda mount by Warn was not as good as the mount sold by Cabela's on another buddies (The Cabela's one had more support).
Good luck.

If you buy the Warn 2500, it comes with a roller fairlead and a hand contoller that has a mount it sits in on the handlebar or can be lifted out of and held on an 8 foot cord, for remote use. You might want to check, but I think the SuperWinch switch is not rated to handle the amperage that is required of the Warn system, and thus cannot be used with it. Is that right, Tree Farmer?

I have a warn 2000, and the rotary switch mounts just fine on the bars. I have it mounted on a SP500.

Both the Warn and Superwinch work well. I've seen a few Superwinch rocker switches get replaced with the Warn switch.
