Default jetting for the mountains.

Ok, here it goes.

When will the elevation start to affect my jetting for my kodiak 450? I will be in the mountains all summer and was just wondering if at 5000 to 7000 feet, the mixture in the carb would be too lean or whatever.

Also will the K&N air filter kit with a K&N Jet kit help me out? make things worse? Also thinking of an exhaust end cap for the bike. I want one but know if they have had problems or not.

I guess I will have to ride there first to see what happens. I would like to know ahead of time if anyone has had any problems with elevation and jetting on their kodiak 450's.

Thanks a lot for any relevant nfo at all.

Do an advanced search of "high altitude". There are a lot of good posts on this.

I ride everywhere from BELOW sea level, to over 10,000'. I often have an altitude change of ~7,000' on one days ride! You can't jet for everywhere, so I use the TPI (http://www.thunderproducts.com/tpi_valve.htm) As I ascend in altitude, I open the TPI for more air, then close it as I descend again. Works great, for those who ride at verying altitudes

As you go up you are too rich. Too much fuel to too little oxygen. You need smaller jets. Your dealer should be able to tell you what you need for the elevation you plan to ride.

"High altitude" as the search phrase, and "select all" as the forum category.

So, I assume you live down on the prarie somewhere, and your bike has stock factory jetting? If you are going to be at high altitude ALL summer, it is worth rejetting. You ALWAYS need to JET FOR THE LOWEST ALTITUDE YOU WILL BE AT!!! This is important, because if you don't, when you descend to lower altitude, your bike will run lean and toast your motor! When you ascend to higher altitude, the mixture gets richer, which makes the bike run bad, but at least won't ruin anything.

I would highly recommend the TPI, because even in the mountains you will see a lot of altitude changes. The TPI will allow you to fine tune the ride, out on the trail while riding! Again though, don't ever let the bike run lean, by forgetting to close the valve when you go back to lower altitude!

The K&N is a good idea, because it will give you more power overall. Then when you lose it at altitude, you will have more to spare. You want to put ON an endcap??? I assume to make it quieter??? Usually one takes this kind of stuff off to get better performance.

Everybody pray for EFI, OK!
