But you re comparing it to a VAN. I have a 350 in my truck, it doesnt make as much hp as the camaro or the vette. And in case you didnt know this, GM underrates hp of their 350. The camaro was rated at 300hp/320 ft torque. Mine dynod at 296/312 at the wheels, which comes out to 345/370 at the flywheel. They did this for insurance and so that the vette, their flagship, wouldnt lose sales.

Now they have a 327(5.3) and thats what you re comparing the new dodge to. Alot of things could make up the 100 hp youre talking about, cam, intake, exhaust, computer programming, and yes the heads also. GM is also known for cutting hp with the computer. And again, it may not be 100hp difference in the real world, it may just be a marketing thing.

Besides, Dodge cant make a tranny to handle the hp so who cares.

Back to ATV's, If I am figuring right if Arctic Cat makes their own engine the will be the only Truely American Made ATV in the industry. None of the others use U.S. engines.

If you want to compare the 5.7 chevy engine to a Dodge, then compare it to the 5.9 that Dodge used. Thats more apples and apples.

And also, whoever said the 5.3 is a 327 is wrong. Its a 325cu. They haven't made the 327 in over 30 years.

Polaris has had there own engine since 2001. The 600 and 700 Twin are part of the Liberty family of Polaris motors.

oooooh, you said the magic word.... HEMI.... I CAN say it.... I have a yellow original 70 Hemi cuda' in my garage that I have patted and pampered and kept under a bunch of grandma's hand made quilts since I bought it new...at 17 no less, and I have to admit it does not come out of the garage too often any more though.... Can't afford the insurance liability.. more of a trailer queen and garage monster now... but oh yeah, it's got a HEMI alright. All 426 cubic inches worth... And yes, I have an 03 quad cab with the HEMI too... I likes this beast... I use the car for a conversational piece.

Definately old school... but I like it that way.... License plate reads RUMBLEZ.... FOr a 6000 lb tank, it has impressive power. And with the Cuda', I think I know a little about power....

But back to ATV's, after being a semi factory sponsored Ski-doo rider from my youthful days, I'd sure hate to get on the enemy's machine, but if it has a hemi.. well, we will have to see....

Isnt HEMI just more of a catch phrase now a days??.........I mean honestly, Im sure its a great engine, but the HEMI desing is from so long ago, wouldnt EVERY manufacturer make one by now if it was the end all of engine designs??,..........Heck I used to own a DODGE NEON, and it dispaced 2.0 liters. It had 150HP......Taking the 5.7 HEMI size, and multiplying for my old neons power, you come out with a much higher 428 horsepower if the 2.0 WAS ACTUALLY 5.7 liters. So the basic econocar NEON engine has a WAY higher power/liter output than the so called AWESOME HEMI. Explain how an econocar can make a lot more power/liter than the HEMI?? The NEON engine wasnt exactly HIGH TECH, and this was in 1995. So being a HEMI isnt the only way to make a lot of horsepower/liter.

Oh I agree with you that the design is old and definitely old school... just the way I like it...With the addition of fuel injection, it is even better. Not to say that the motor isn't capable of making tons more horsepower... the biggest part of the equation is conained in the computer chip running it... You can re-program it and make significant gains... The advertized HP rating is not indicative to it's ultimate potential.

Design wise, the hemispherical configuration is a much improved design over your typical pushrod engine. I do however believe the overhead cam engines can make a lot of power and turn a ton of revs.... but it is all relative. If you have ever had the pleasure of riding in an original 426 street hemi muscle car, you would understand the pure reverence it is given by the worshipers of the mopar mark. The HP ratings back then were a Joke... and other than the Boss 429 Mustangs, and the real AC 427 Cobra that Ford sold... there was nothing to run with it...

Draginnbutt, I had to reply after seeing you write that nothing ran with the hemi cuda except the Boss 429 and the Cobra, However I beg to differ. You left out several GM muscle cars that were more than capable of running with the Hemi and the most important one was the L-88 427 in a vett. I agree that the hemi's were awesome and that is why a version of the chrysler hemi is still used in top fuel dragsters however they were not in a class alone. The L-88 was underrated by 150 hp and very much ran with the hemi. I don't just credit the hemi design for the power of the 426 because that isn't even the original displacement of the hemi. I believe the originals were something like 330 cu in and 390 cu in and the few I came across street racing didn't impress me. Many engines use the same concept they just don't call it a Hemi because I think it is a Chrysler trademark. I know the 426 Hemi is awesome and would love to have one in a 69 charger, But I have seen a few get toasted by a big block Chevy. I also watched people with 440's and 454's make fun of a guy with a dodge dart with a 273 commando in it. They laughed a little less when he lit the n-50's up through 3rd gear and they quit laughing all together when both their big blocks lost to him several runs. We had a guy trailer a super bee to where we raced that had wrinkle walls, 440 ,two fours and was a full blown race car and he lost to my buddies 69 nova with a 327 everytime they ever raced. The 327 had a factory high rise off a 69 Z-28 302 cu in and headers, But internally the engine was built to street race.I know I am rambling I just don't like it when people think a certain car or engine is king and nothing can keep up when in real life for every fast street car there is one faster. I thought this was an ATV forum anyways.

Yeah, you are right... I actually had an L-88 427 in a 68 Camaro once.. and it was an animal...Right out of the crate I was running 11:00's with no tunup... So I agree with you... Original size was 392, and very few of the race Hemi's actually made it into production. Most of what you saw on teh street were "Street" Hemis, and they were nothing compared to the race version. Chevy had their COPO cars (Camaro) and guys like Nickyey and Yenko did a very good job on Novas as well. My brother had a Hemi 69 charger from Mr. Norm's in Chicago. It also helped us both that he worked for Chrysler at the time, so we had all the inside information from guys like Dick Landy and the Ramchargers. I just missed out on getting an original hemi Dart.. the problem was they were going to the "known" racers of the day, and Dodge only made a few cars to qualify as production vehicles. I settled for the Cuda'. Yellow with White leather interior.. not to many of them made. Most came with black interior.

I almost had my hands on a 63 split window vette once too, Black with red interior with factory fuel injection, factory Air. They made maybe 12 to 15 of them in that combination... my dad wouldn't help me get the loan.. he felt I had caused enough problems with the Cuda already.

I will agree with you that the LS series cars were strong, but nothing like the L-88s. I had an unfair advantage with the connections to chrysler, so maybe it is not a fair statement to make on my part, but there were very few non chyslers in my area that would keep up. Sans the aformentioned L-88 Camaro... that guy was so fast I had to buy the car from him to keep my reputation intact...

I'll tell you another quick ar that almost could keep up with my Cuda, and would consistantly hammer my brother's charger was some guy in a 340 Dart. That car was the fastest thing I have ever seen out of the showroom. I sure would have liked to know what he had done to the inside of that engine, but it ran like a raped ape.

Understand all of these cars with the exception of the Camaro, were driven daily on the street back and forth to high school and our jobs at the local grocery store (Brother much older than me at Chrysler plant). I got hooked on dirt midgets and sprint cars soon after High school and lost interest in Drag racing.. did a little flat tracking and early MX racing too, along with a stint racing snowmobiles for a local Ski-doo dealer, then came marriage, kids etc.. and the military...

Any way, I am sorry, I stand corrected...
