Is it good to switch to a different type of oil for the winter cold? I usually run yamalube 10w30 all year without a problem.

If your motor spins over fast enough, and doesnt make knocking noise, when cold, then what youre running is ok. The service manual for my yami has 5w 30 optional, for when the temp is below 32 degrees. But doesnt reccommend for over 32 degrees.

 

That depends on how cold it gets where you live. Some oil cans have a temp chart printed right on the bottle. Every operators manual that I have seen has an oil temp chart in them. This will tell you the weight of oil to use.
Most true synthetics have ridiculous temp spreads. Like 40 below to 130 above F.

 

Once the machine is broken in you cannot beat synthetic oils for the colder weather.

Follow WhiskeyTangoFoxtrot advice, use a FULL synthetic in weather like this.

 

Amsoil has a 0-40 synthetic which should work well up there.

 

Yeah you know it is getting cold when your deep freeze actually is warmer than it is outside. I have friends from warmer climates who can't get over that. They see the temp in the freezer and it dawns on them that it is actually warmer in there than it is outside. Personally I think once it hits about 10 below I don't notice it getting much colder. My body just says that is is too cold to worry anymore and quits sending any further sensory updates as far as temperatures are concerned. Sort of like the brain saying "Hey dummy, it is really cold.... That's all you need to know...."
