What type of gas mileage should I expect from a Utility quad used on open trails?

From the numbers I've read so far, I'd guess about 20mpg for a 500cc size quad. What about a 700 size?

 

That's a really tough question to answer. It depends on the size of the motor, and how you're riding. If you're on level easy, high speed gravel, you'll get better mileage than if you're in the 'rough', going up and over stuff at slow speeds. Also, whether you're in 2wd or 4wd makes a big difference, just like in a pickup. There's too many variables to make a definite statement on mileage. I ride with 700EFI polaris, 660Griz and a 750 Brute force. When traveling over the same terrain the mileage come out like this.

Griz660 best, Polaris 700EFI next, then the 750 Brute Force. The BF750 is not too far behind the Polaris though and has a bigger tank which allows for more range.

I have a 02 Traxer XT, 5.2 gallons and get 120 miles on a tank, that is up and down speeds. It can vary sometimes as it depends if your working it or driving it really hard it will obviously get less. But I've gotten 123 miles before having to hit reserve.

I find I can get around 20MPG if I am cruising around on level trails. Obviosuly other types of driving consume more.

 

After about 70-75 miles on my grizz I am looking for some gas. usally have to switch to reserve!

 

i get about 13-15 on my grizzly, but i ride it like there's no tomorrow[img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif[/img]

You have to care when your doing the type of trips alot of us do, 100 mile trips and if you don't have extra gas because you don't care what it gets, well what are you doing then, getting pulled home or walking if your alone, right. and were talking in all different terrain from mountains, to water crossings, to mud, to snow riding to fast fire road riding.
Personally I never want to carry more then 5 gallons of gas on a run, and some of these runs are very remote so you don't hit gas stations.

I can see your point Buckshot about the cost of gas. That isn't really what I'm concerned about. More concerned about how far I can go and what kind of plans I need for refueling. I plan to take some trips in Colorado this summer and need to decide how much gas I need to haul with me.

Would be nice if you could get a 10 gal tank on these rigs as an option. That would give you twice the cruising distance and you'd only about about 40 lbs to the overall bike.
