I have a Garmin eTrex legend, and it does accept maps, gives you speed/altitude/major points of interest/etc. They run around $100.00 or so. The only bad thing is it can be hard to read in direct sunlight. I have taken it riding a few times, but what was really beneficial to me was using it to geocache a few times. I really started getting the hang of it then. For now, this seems to be all the model I need, but you could definately get a nicer one for $250.00. Don't forget to budget in accessories, as you may need to buy a map program, an adapter to mount the thing to your quad, etc.

 

Dang, all the options. I just want one that maps my trails on a topo map. haha. i wish i could just find one. I hate all the crazy things after the garmin.

 

I have a garmin GPSIII+, I don't think they make them anymore but I've seen them on sale for around $250. It has maps and can do more than what you actually need. I think the GPSIII+ was upgraded to GPSV. Check out my pictures. I think Garmin makes the best GPS unit.

 

I have the Magellan explorist 300. It has a compass, barometer for weather, altimeter, and is completely waterproof. Its next to the best of them, imo, and it was 200 dollars. It follows your route, and when you want, it marks points of interest and saves them. It automatically has all major roads, airports, highways, ect.... stored and mapped on it in north america

 

I have a Garmin Vista that has been great for what I want to do. I have the Mapsource Topo CD. I also have the yellow Garmin E-Trex that I got years ago and it simply doesn't have enough features IMO.

 

I have the garmin V. It is a great unit. I was up in the mts this past week and the gps was shoing forest service roads. I did not have topo on my unit at the time but I will have it soon. What every you decide to get make sure it is one that you can download maos to it...

 

V2rider, you gps sounds like what im looking for, can you give me more info on it.

 

We are very active geocachers and we have found a lot of caches while we ride our quads so we spent a lot of time using our GPSr's while riding. We currently have 3 GPS units--1 Greyscale/B&W and 2 color units. All three units are Garmins.

Whatever you get, I'd recommend spending the xtra money to get a color screen as opposed to the greyscale screens. When you are bouncing around on some trail on your quad while trying to read your GPS, you will find it's much easier to read the screen on the color models due to the better contrast between the colors. Yeah, the color screens cost more but it's worth every penny. I didn't realize the difference until I bought a color unit. Now I find the greyscale unit almost annoying to use.

I believe that nearly all of the color units have mapping capability so you should be okay there.

Don't forget to add $100 to the cost of your GPS to pay for the mapping software. The basemaps on most GPS units are VERY basic. You'll want the better maps and they are about $100 for a detailed map of the USA

I sure can, what do you want to know? Actually, if you go to www.magellangps.com and click on "explorist series" you will find all the info you need. Then which ever one you want, look on Ebay for it, and you will find a new one for alot lower price

 

thanks for the info guys. I really appreciate it. I was looking at the magellan explorist and it already has a "detailed" map or whatnot. I was wondering if i get the 100 doller downloadable map, would that be better for seeing the mountainis terrain i ride in. I think i found the gps i want but still just figuring out the details. thanks guys.
