changing to synthetic rope?
#1
Ok I have a venom winch on my rancher and am going to switch to synthetic. First off the cable is 15/64", so I'm guessing that the size of the synthetic rope should be 1/4", right? And the cable is I think 35 ft. long, so how many feet of synthetic can I put on it? And where would be the cheapest place to get the synthetic rope and hawse fairlead? Thanks.

Just purchased a new Amsteel Blue 3/16" synthetic rope from rockstomper.com. They were the cheapest I could find. I also ordered the new aluminium hawse fairlead from them also. The rope was $42, and the fairlead was $35. $77 with shipping, ordered last night and shipped today, should be here in a few days. I am anxious to see the new rope on the new Grizz since the rope is about the same color as the Yamaha Blue, the fairlead is a Spidertrax and is a really nice looking piece, should accent the front nicely. BTW I am disassembling my Warn 2.5 winch while it is out the machine. I helped take a neighbors apart yesterday, and the grease was extremely nasty, so I will take mine apart and regrease the whole thing.

Would a 3/16" rope be the right size for mine. It seems since mine is a 15/64" that 1/4" would be the right size? Anybody know. And how many feet should I put on there. Big Dog if that is the right size then I might.

From what I understand the rope is much more durable and will not kink like traditional steel cable. It also will not rust, fray, or store energy under tension. That means when stretched to the limit then broken it will not snap back and cut or injure you. It is also much lighter so less strain on your winch, and has less tendency to "spool up" like the steel cable and jump the drum. I know personally that will be a big advantage, I have done that a few times on off angle pulls, and the cable jumped inside the spool and I had to take it apart. One disadvantage, if you want to call it that, is that you must replace your fairlead when putting new synthetic rope on. I went with the hawse style this time, I currently have a roller and some times it seems like the cable gets in the corners of the fairlead and hangs a bit. I know always pull straight, but sometimes you can't, and gotta do what you gotta do to get out, or someone else out of a sticky situation. Geez I sound like a salesman, maybe bigdog can give some more insight into the synthetic rope. Sorry bigdog 800 I didn't buy from you, I had no idea a fellow forum member sold the rope. I will refer many of my friends who are wanting to see how mine works, then order their own.
