winch question
#1
I have been doing a lot of plowing with my Yamaha Grizz with 60" moose plow, and tonight I had my cable break. I am totally new to ATV's and winch troubles so I was wondering do I just retie the cable to the hook and if so, is there any I can do to make sure the connection is as strong as possible? What is the best advice you can give me to stop this from happening again or is this common when plowing? Thanks and I really appreciate any help you can give me.

Are you using rope of cable? If you are using synthetic rope, you can tie it back. If it's cable, you will need to purchase a new cable. I've had bad luck with my rope breaking when using my plow and cable seems to hold up better. I think it's probably the angle of the pull that causes breakage.

I usually use 3 cable clamps after I have wound the cable around the body of the clevis "twice" and as tight as I can. Its a hassle to do, but will last a long time. The other thing I do, is "not" use my 50' cable. I have several 6-8 footers, all set up with clevis's on them. I keep an extra one on the quad with me. Short cables are a 2 second change-out. Snow plowing and repeated lifting will screw up the end of youe cable, gets it kinky and frayed. I put my long cable back on when snow season is over!

Same problem here when plowing, repeatedly breaking the steel cable. I did as above and made up a few 6 footers which are quick to swap over for plowing, and reinstall my 50' for summer riding.
Some people have used 1" nylon straps for plowing with good success, others have used the synthetic winch rope with good results. Also, you can change the bottom roller of your roller fairlead to a much larger diameter roller which helps extend cable life.
The cable can be reattached by looping it through your winch hook and using 3 winch rope cable clamps. Please google the proper way to install the clamps on the net.
