All mechanics that I have asked say to use 87 unless specified in the owners manual. So that's what I run.

I fully agree, you will hear some guys say " I run premium, or I mix a little race fuel in, and I get more power, and it runs so much better", that is total bunk, all octane does is resist detonation, or exploding before the spark plug can ignite it. In fact, a standard, low compression motor may actually run worse on premium or race fuel, it is harder to burn in a low compression motor, may leave deposites from incomplete burning, cause hard starting, especially in cold weather, and most of all, you are just wasting money. I know there will be replies that " I've been running prem. or race fuel for years, it really makes a difference", but that just isn't so. If you have a carboned up old motor that pings on reg, yes prem will run without pinging, but you are better off cleaning out the old motor and running regular. Sorry about the long post, but I'm sure I'll get a few bricks thrown at me for my opinions.

I don't think you will get too much grief. I fully agree with you, unless the motor is set up to run it, don't waste your money. If a person truly understands how a motor works, they won't argue with you.

Thanks a lot guys! I have been running regular 87 octane. The king quad 450 backfired a couple of times though, and I am unsure why...could be getting to much fuel..? I thought maybe weaker octane could have caused it aswell..

A back fire can be caused by a lean condition, poor spark letting unburned gas build up, or a timing issue, if it keeps happening, you should get it looked at.

I use 87 octane. It's a waste of money to put premium in it.

I use the 89 octane just to be safe from pre-detention
