IS A WINCH REALLY NECCESARY?

Most of you guys make it hard for someone asking a legitimate question to get a sincere, straight answer when your egos get in the way, your testosterone boils over, and your "wittle feewings" get hurt.
Also, for crying out loud, can any of you, Tree Farmer and TxDoc2 excluded, say S-P-E-L-L-C-H-E-C-K!?

drlaney,
Life is like a rubber band, unless it's streched it's absolutely useless. That is not merely ego. Ask yourself, why do I own a Quad, irregardless of your exact riding style; why do people skydive, ski, rollerblade or race cars: is it ego, or is it to press the limits of this life a experience it to its fullest?
Again, why do you have a quad? The answer to that question is why other's feel that the need to mount a winch to their quad. Try not to be so very judgemental in your assessment of others.
The Bible warn's (man I'll probably get flamed for this), "remove the tree from your own eye, before you attempt to remove the splinter from your neighbors. Matt. 7:4-6"
And to accuse one's ego or writing checks that their ability or equipment can't cash, is no less a fuction of the ego as saying you're above doing that. Think on these things.

Ouch, MissouriGriz I know that occasionally I'll throw a bad one out, but for the most part, my posts are legible and correct.
I'll go sooth my ego with a Dictionary. (lol)

I agree with Drlaney, and I have a winch. I still agree with him. Not necessary for the larger percentage of utility quad owners. Not necessary for me either, though I do have one.

So, Mr. Bassham sell me your winch at a very cheap price and it'll solve both our problems.
I'll even pay the shipping.

Save your money! Take a heavy rope, loop it around your axel a couple of times then take it through the wheel and tie it off, put it in gear and the rope will pull you out without a winch. I have tried a winch before, it was too heavy, changed the handling of the quad too much, cost too much, switches didn't work well. Try the rope or a come along.

WARNING: Avert your eyes, Andy; you already know the author; also, the following post may contain no "Plain Bubba English." (smiley faces)
Necessary?
Is an ATV, "Necessary?"
Bruce, looping a rope around an axle sounds like an innovative field expedient, without a winch available.
In your experience, recovering stuck ATV's with this technique, how does it work, pulling from the side, front and rear? How would you rate the ease and convenience, muddiness, and speed of rigging up, axle rope vs. winch?
I don't consider a winch "necessary," nor even an ATV "necessary," but I find both make my life more enjoyable.
I ride a utility, often alone, and am willing to take chances on getting stuck. I'm willing to pay the relatively small price of a winch as insurance and as something expanding my horizons.
By no means do I suggest mine's the only way; every reader of this Forum thinks for himself and makes his own decisions, each as valid as another.

YES, Most definitely. I had a choice when I bought
my new cat, of either a gortex riding suit or a winch. I'm glad I went with the winch. After spending 45 minutes digging and winching my cat out of the snow today I was pleased that I made the right decision. The weather had just turned mild today, a few degrees above freezing. The snowmbile trails that I've been riding for the past week, could no longer support the weight of my cat. If it wasn't for the winch to pull me up and out, I've still been there. A winch is a must

Tree Farmer- you lost me with "Avert". No, just kidding. The topic title was "Is a winch really necessary" with necessary being the key word. All I'm doing is answering that question with my opinion. I like my winch and as you know, it has saved my butt before. No, I can't sell it to you HondaHunter, because it looks too good on the front of that AC. It wasn't something that I had ever considered buying before I got it in the promo deal for $100, but I will say that it is nice to have. I wouldn't cough up $300+ for one, but $100 financed in with payments is no big deal. My answer to the question remains no, but I like having the winch and it is a great backup plan if a balsy adventure goes awry.
