Grizzly vs Sportsman 500
#2
I own a 99 Sportsman equipped with a HP clutch kit,26 inch Mudrunners, and KN filter.I dragged raced my co-workers 98 Grizz[without the clutch kit] and I beat him in every phase of the race.As for mudding, the Grizz is no match for the Sportsman in the real serious stuff. We did alot of mudding that afternoon and I was pulling him out quite a bit.Of coarse, after I whip ANYONE in the mud, they allways lay claim to my tires being the differance. And they do make a big differance, but so does the AWD system on the Sportsman [spins all 4 wheels]vs limited slip[only 3 wheels spin] on the Grizz. Now the newer Grizz [1999] only weighs 600lbs.Im betting that it probably CAN out drag my heavier [697lb] Sportsman. On the Sportsman,I personally like the liquid cooled,IRS,AWD system, and ride ALOT more than the Grizz, and the Sportsman costs less.====BILL

Hey SS I have a '00 Grizzly and I can tell you that stock, the Grizzly is faster than the Sportsman. However when it comes to mud ridding the Sportsman wins with the better four wheel drive system and more ground clearance, around 1.5" according to specs. This of course is just a stock comparision.

Rooster, its to bad you feel that way.You seem to be the only one that feels that way.Comparing me to Max?Now how do you make an assumtion like that? What did I say that could possible make me and Max sound alike?I only gave my point and I tried to do it without bias.Im sorry if you mistaken ANYONE for me sounding like the Max.But the truth of the matter is that the way my 4x4 Sportsman is equipped [Mudrunners,HP clutch kit]So far,I have never been out done in the mud yet by any other quad.I mentioned that I had those Mods too.Do I think I own the baddest Mudder around? No I dont.Do I think I have the fastest 4x4?No I dont.I think I made those things perfectly clear in my last posts.Does Grizzly Jim sound like the Max to?Im sorry if I offended anyone.Thats not what I meant by my post.====BILL

Well actually in my book where it says minimum ground clearance it says 6.89in. However it's advertised as 10.6in and I thought the SP was 12in so thus my 1.5 that I came up with. I guess it all comes down to where you wanna take the measurement from which the 10.6 on the Grizz is at the floorboards and the 6.89 being the rear diff.

Hey yall Im going to tell yall from personal experiance that the 00' 500 sportsman is by far better all around than the 00' grizzly.
Ive bought a 00' hunters edition gizzly about 4 mounths ago because I thought since it had another 100cc's that it was the baddest thing around. Well I was wrong. Ibought some 26-9.5-12 vampires for the front of it and some 26-12-12 for the back and it was a mean quad dont get me wrong. The quad was good in the mud but the differential killed the atvs performance big time!! I ride with some boys who have a 99 335 sportsman and anoter boy who had a 99 450s honda with 25' mudrunners. Both of these two quads could go any where I went and when we had a pull off I couldnt budge the honda nor the sportsman and the sportsman was on stock tires! That is what was the real mind changer. After that about a month later and after alot of mechinical problems I decided to go and get the new 00' RSE 500 sportsman and man have i ever made a better decision! The 500 sportsman is in another world compared to the yamahas and hondas. The ride is much more flush and comfortable. The 4 wheel drive system is a major Plus on this quad. This 4x4 is in my opinion better stock than a grizzly on Vamps.
Others may disagree but Ive been in all the same holes that I went with the grizzly and all are the same results. the holes I got stuck in with the grizzly I got stuck in with the 500, and the holes I made it through with the grizzly I made it through with the sportsman. but since all this Ive made some major changer to my quad. Its a bad @$$ mud machine now. Ive put a HL lift kit on it, 27-12-12 Vamps all around, wheel spacers, itp rims, warn 2000lb winch with roller fairlead, herculiner on bumpers and racks, and many other little mods here and there too. Im real impresed with the 500 sportsman and in a shoot out I think the polaris 500 would come out on top of this one. Something I forgot to mention Is that I think but am not sure that the grizzly will out run the 500. I never had a chance to race the two since I traded one in on the other. I hope this changes someones mind because I wish I would have knew all this about about the peformance of the sportsman before I went and got that grizzly. It would have saved me alot of time and money!
