As some of you may know I have been having a hard time deciding on which atv to buy...I am not buying at this momnet but i am trying to get a quad I really like, I have been looking at the Sportsman 500, Xplorer 400, and the Yamha Kodiak, I am not really considering the Sportsman 500, becasue it is so big and heavy, and S L O W, (sorry SP owners no offence) that is why i am looking at the Kodiak Auto and the Xplorer 400, From what i have heard most people like th Xplorer and so do i , but i have heard complants abou the chain in the rear, so i was in the Arcitc cat forum, and i am now considering the 500, 4by4 either the auto or the Manual....all you probably think im crazt because i cant make up my mind sorry, but could anyone give me a little advice?

Make yourself happy and buy the one that appeals most to you! Not quite sure where you
get your info about the Sportsman being slow and do not wish to create an arguement
about it either, but for a nearly 700lb machine show me another as fast or as capable.
Obviously your selection that you've given really shouldn't include the Sportsman 500, it
simply is in a totally different class of machine. I think if you want fast and you truly want
to include the Explorer as part of your choice, the Kodiak is probably going to lose that
one! Chain drive I think is really a non issue since they're still used (successfully)in a large
variety of machines. Also with the concentric drive system (shaft drive to the front) now on
the Polaris you'll be adjusting the chain with more ease and also give you better power
tranfer. Maintenance, yeah, sure its more(not that much more), be real though and
understand that nothing (ie. shaft drive) is completely maintenance free.

If you really want to do a camparison, put the Magnum 500 up against the Kodiak, and I
still think you'll have to give the nod to Polaris. Not going to re-hash the feature list here,
but Yamaha ain't there yet!!! If you want it because it's Yamaha ....BUY IT and be happy.
As for the Magnum, don't even go to the reliability issue because it is NOT there on this
unit (too many of them showing up on this forum from satisfied customers)!

Donald J. Dickinson 99 Magnum 500, 99 Sport 400L Ooh yeah!

clindst,

As I said in the Polaris forum, get your butt up here to Canada. I am sure I can change your mind on the Sportsman 500. It is an incredibly capable and fast machine!
