Looking at a "true 4wd" quad
#1
This question may have been asked before, but I need to know the scoop on it.
Which quads offer "true 4wd" (not a diff front end)?
I know that Polaris does, but are there any other ones? I am considering a 1999-2001 model.
thanks in advance!

The grizzly has a locking front dif. and right now they are selling at chicago cycles for 5995.00. Polaris is asking that for the 500! So take a close look at what you get for the hard earned money that you are spending!

I know it may not be "true" as in locked 4wd, but the new Suzuki Eiger and Vinson limited slip acts as a true limited slip should: when one wheel spins faster than the other it distributes power to both wheels on the front axle. This was verified by a buddy watching me climb a steep snow covered ditch last weekend. I feel this has more advantages than disadvantages when compared to a locked axle. For example compared to my buddy's Polaris, the Eiger steers much easier in 4wd and is more nimble between trees etc in tight going when you want to make some time...of course that could be since it is also 110 lbs lighter than the Polaris...

If your looking for a 99-01 model, I'm not sure if there is one with "true" 4WD from the factory. The Polaris has the ability to act as a "true" 4WD. But the systen still has to slip to engage. Plus because its "directional", it doesn't allow for front wheel engine braking when going down hill. The Traxter has a very effective front end, but it has to slip some before it "locks" up. The AC system works well also, but its not "true" 4WD. If your really looking for "true" 4WD you will have to buy a 4x4 quad with a limited slip front dif, and lock it up with an after market locker.

Dennis Lirk sells atv lockers.
How big of a machine do you want? My King quad as a locking front diff. All the traction you could ask for.

Archer

powercat,
I don't even know if they make a locker for your quad, so I don't know if there is a web site that might help you out. One thing to keep in mind is that any limited slip/open differential can be locked up. Its really a matter of whether you want it to be reversable or not. I welded my front end to lock it up. I tried an after market locker, and it didn't hold up, so I welded it. Haven't regretted it for a minute. Its not reversable, but I would never go back to the stock dif anyway, so I'm happy with the choice I made.
