What's the best way to attack deep mud?
Yes, never ride solo. 2 years ago i got stuck on the 300 honda, was there for 3.5 hours, the bugs ate me alive! and there's never a sturdy tree near by when you need it.
If it's an auto i'd say low range if you got mudding tires (they get more traction at low rpm's) but if they're stock high range might work better because the faster they spin the taller they get, and the tred ain't to good on the stock ones, so momentum is key.
BTW galljc, how do you like the sp600?? was thinking of mabey getting one next year. (Polaris always has good deals on there quads-new)

Thanks for the advice. I really like my SP600. I went riding with another guy who had a prairie 400 and man what a difference the IRS makes. We were flying over moguls at 35-40mph. The SP600 chasis stays level and seems to float while the IRS soaks up the bumps. The prairie flew all over and you really had to stay flexed to keep under control. I also like the new tires, I think they are called Rawhides. They really bite into everything. I'd say you wouldn't be sorry.
Thanks
John

I got a REALLY good deal. For some reason the Hitching Post in Minneapolis, MN had the 600's for $5399.00 I wouldn't have bought one otherwise but I couldn't resist that price. I'm not sure of the power vs 500/700 but i've heard that a 500 will match it off the line but after 40-50mph the 600/700's keep going quick. I experienced this vs a 400 prairie but it was more like even to 35mph then the 600 ate it for lunch.

that is a good price, for US to CDN dollars on a polaris you usually add $1200 or so. (sp500 retail 6999US, -- $8200cdn)
so $5399 goes to $6600, i've never seen one anywhere's that cheap!
I'm hoping to get one (sp600-blue) at the end of next summer for around $8000 plus taxes. ($9200) and that would be a good deal!

I can vouch for that.
On the other hand I find, at least in my riding experience, that I am the one voted 'first thru' when we come an exceptionally nasty looking crossing. Whether it be a mud hole, swamp or some other obstruction with the 'unknown' factor.
I haven't quite figured it out yet. But I do know this much:
Sometimes I am the first one to give it a try because they don't think ANY machine can get through, and they want to see me get stuck (sometimes they are right ).
Other times it is because they know I will try anything, within reason, if I have backup. They just want to see someone get through. Then they give it a try themselves.
I am not saying this to brag. I get my machine stuck frequently, when I am with a group. But that is simply because I do what we all do . . . try to find the hardest, muddiest, soupiest line through the hole. Sometimes other 'stock' machines can follow, many times they cannot. But that would be the same with any other modified machine out there.
