Default Puget Sound/Seattle NW Area Riders Meet HERE!!!

I posted these questions in the honda forum, but I am also looking for advice from my buddies.

As those of you at Beverly know, the engine in my 400ex gave up the ghost. It took me through a season of motocross racing, lots of dune and trailriding, but now it's toast. We found pieces of the piston down in the bottom of the case (sniff, sniff)

But the good news is, I get my big bore kit

My questions:

1) Where can I order a quality big bore kit (cylinder, piston, rings, gaskets) and not get burned?

2) Is the 440 kit bolt on or does it require case machining? I'm pretty sure that the 416 kit is bolt on.

Joel, I heard your response, and I sorta agree with you, but I'm not ready to buy another quad yet. There are a few other things that have to be taken care of first.

Thanks for your help!!!!!!!!!!!

Marcy, I don't know if Athena makes a kit for the Honda, but I am really happy with mine being (being below the 450cc to 700cc group). The Athena kit came with a whole new cyclinder that just needed to be bolted on. No machining or sleeve inserting and U keep Ur old cylinder. I paid around 5hundy and it had all the needed gaskets for higher compression also. Good luck got a time line before Florence.

My timeline is to get the bugs worked out of mine before RMC on the 23rd. I have always had some probs with my Eddybrock and now the Rekluse just doesn't seem to like playing hard in the sand, I think too much slippage caused by the resistance. Gonna throw the good old manual clutch back in and try a few more tweaks of the carb if no good time to get an FCR.

HappaRap,

I run 22's on the preddy... Stock dirt tires are 20's. The stock gearing is kinda tall for 5th gear dirt tires, similar to your situation. I went down a tooth in the front to run the 22" sand tires for a 13/38 combo. It gives me enough gears to play with on the hills. Gear it too tall and the turns in the tree-shoots get a little fast. I like low gearing to play on the hills.

However, I did buy 2 rear sprockets to maximize top-end in 5th gear depending on tire size and the style of riding (sand, dirt, clay). In the end I have a 13 and 14 tooth for the front and 36,37,38 for the rear. 14/37 stock for '03 and 14/38 stock for 05. If you look at the chart, this gives me the whole range, step by step.

Buy one tooth smaller in the front, then you can see where to go from there without buying a bunch of rear sprockets.

RaptorRandy, they make me play fair by checking my oil at the start of every race so I dont get to roost on all races

Flat track or TT i believe. TP, Racergirl, 2mny, Madmax, Dirtmomma, Maggiesboy and Cheech SHOW US other Quaders how it's done.
Some how in the course of my life going around in CIRCLES made me DIZZIE........

Racing at florence will definately be a different animal since we'll have our quiet cores in. Uncorked, the preddy does well, but stop-up the exhaust and it's real noticable. I re-gear for the sand and quiet cores, so it will be slower when I'm out playin' around. Might think about scoping out a drag strip when nobody's lookin' and takin' out the quiet cores...
Randy doesn't have to change anything, he'll be running the same setup while others are inserting quiet cores and possibly rejetting, I'd say at that point the 700R has the advantage

Guess I'm gonna have to make a trip up to Mt. Vernon and visit my favorite 700R wrencher when my chit comes in
