Default Alaska - Where's the hot spots???

Hey Snug, I am not sure he wants to sell it now or I should say he does but he got hit with child support and his renters have not been paying on time and he is not sure if he can go out and buy a new one right away.
As for my trailer I plan on keeping it for when I do not need the 4 place trailer, I have a big back yard and can just park it off under the trees for when I do not need it. I hear of quads for sale all the time and will let you know if any pop up.
The area you went riding in is it this area. Take the Old Glen from Palmer side follow it down for 5 miles or so, turn left at the flashing light and follow the road around till you see a parking lot on the left or did you come in thru the dragstrip?AlaskaBoy.

Snug, When you took the trail thru the woods, did you come out onto the riverbed? If so just follow the left side of the river bed up to the glacier. Just becarful when you cross Jim Creek and Friday Creek as the warm weather is reeking havoc on the trail right now. I was just out there to work on a house and I saw alot of open water on the Knik river and would not be supprised if the ice is alittle thin on the other two. Once you pass Friday creek there is a trail thru the woods and more then likely a trail that just follows the edge of the trees up to it. It is a good ride, my friends and I used to do it all the time but it is so crowded now that we are riding 2 or more hours from Anchorage and see little or know traffic on the trails that we take.
Did you see many burned out cars while you were there? I took my brother out there in July and there was 14 cars burned by party island, looks like a car caught fire and the rest were packed in to tight to move them quickly and they caught on fire as well. I saw the trooper out there today checking on things, it used to be a bad spot to park your truck while riding but the increased presence of the troopers has helped a little. I take my truck and trailer all the way back to the dunes so I can keep my eye on it. I will be riding the area alot this summer as I am getting my little boy a starter quad and I want to teach him there by the dunes.
I used to bait bears back up towards Friday Creek, lots a blackies in the area and sucecess was pretty good. That was ten years ago so I am not sure how the area is now. AlaskaBoy.

Does anyone still race at Kincaid Park in Anchorage? Thats where I started racing. It sounded like the park was going to close when I left Ak in 1987. My favorite place to trail ride was Hatchers Pass. I used to ride alot also out at Big Lake and in Knik. Even rode the Iditarod trail on snow to Yetna Lodge one year. I miss it up there. Anyone ride at Hatcher Pass anymore?

I rode Kincaid last about 11 years ago. I hear that there is alot of racing. I have never ridden Hatchers but I see lots of trail from the Willow side, maybe some day I will take a trip up there. I ride mostly Eureka or Petersville with a little Denali Highway thrown in, of course I am hunting or scouting or taking the wife and kids out berry picking so that is why I ride these areas.

I would agree with you if I had left but I decided to stay, once Alaska gets in your blood nothing else compares. My intention was to spend a few years up here and make alittle money and head back to Michigan. 14 years later I can not think of another place I would want to live. I go outside on vacation and can not wait to get back.AlaskaBoy.

Good question Slim. Mine is in my shop right now with the motor sitting in tote. I did not get motivated this year as it started out like the last 5 years, no snow, when it did start snowing I was to busy and to frustrated to mess with it. Now it is like spring out side with temps in the 40's and rain, making all the snow melt and turn into hard as concrete. Not the best riding condition's. Winters in Alaska have been realy wierd lately. The Iron Dog snowmachine race was canceled last year and should of been canceled the year before that do to no snow and open leads on the rivers to actual unfrozen rivers. Ski Doo got thier first factory win in the 22 years that the Iron Dog has run, kinda funny that Skidoo started the snowmachine craze and it took this long to win.

When you leave town you see quads and snowmachines on the same trailers and a few dirtbikes as we all share the same trails up here.AlaskaBoy.

Slim you should, There is a couple places to rent sleds from and if there is enough snow the sights are unbelievable. I ran into a lady from Michigan and we got to talking a she was mad that her familys snow machine trip had got canceled do too much snow. I explained to her that it would not be enjoyable ride if you got stuck every ten minutes and it was perfect avalanche conditions to boot. Lots of fresh powder on top of a hard crusty pack, Just waiting to let go.
There is also a couple of places that rent quads for trips into the mountains, alot like Montana or Wyoming I am betting. I love to sled but with my machine broke and with this new life insurance policy my wife and I got I can not ride a snowmachine or motorcycle for the next 2 years or I should say I can not die on those two for the next 2 years. If I did my wife does not get the double face value that it is assigned to the policy. That is okay, I should have everything done on it by that time and it is plenty.AlaskaBoy.

AlaskaBoy, that sounds like the place we were at. We made it to the river and then turned right though. We did see an old Blazer that was in a fire out there. There was a decent Mazda pick-up in the woods burried in snow too.
What kind of problems do people have parking out there? Would hate for the tow vehicles to get messed up.
Where are the "dunes" located?

Thanks
Doug

PS, when will you be heading out to ride again?
