Here's the Red Sticker Open Riding Schedule for California. It's not so much as 2-stroke vs. 4-stroke, it's the emissions. If you buy an out of state 4-stroke it may end up with a Red Sticker. Basically any pre-2003 OHV should have a Green Sticker. 2003 and newer bikes will have a Green or Red Sticker. 2-strokes and some 4-strokes will have Red Stickers and reduced riding schedules.

I'm planning a 3 week trip this July on the bike: Colorado, California, Las Vegas, back to Colorado, then home to Ohio. I'm planning on renting from BJ's again (did in '95) while I'm there. It'll probably be sometime around the 12th-14th, during the week. Looking forward to hitting the dunes again. I had a GREAT time last time!
