Rockingham Rec Trail, Derry, NH
#1
Hi guys:
Today, I drove up to the Windham Depot in Derry, New Hampshire hoping to take a nice ride on the Rockingham Recreational Trail. I was greeted with a big sign prohibiting ATVs and dirtbikes but allowing just about everything else. Before going, I checked the New Hampshire Trail Bureau web site and it said the trail was open to ATVs from the Windham Depot to Fremont. I'm confused. Is the whole trail closed to ATVs? If it's not, where is it open to ATVs and where do I park? Can someone tell me what is going on? Thanks for your help.

You have to park in either Freemont or before the depot. I parked in the parking lot in Freemont. You can ride the trail, Just can't park at the depot no more. Parking in Freemont is the easiest.

I'm from Salem NH, Hey you CAN PARK at that depot in the winter time. If you look at the sign it does say NO ATV, but there is a small sign under it that says they're allowed if there is snow cover on the trail.
I went by a week ago and there were people with ATVs parked there. Hey are there any other trails around here to go riding on ? Trying to dig up some good spots.

I haven't been to this site in awhile, I live in Dover, NH. There is plenty of places to ride just over the border in Maine, I go there all the time. I have ridden the state trails once and personally I thought it sucked. All I did was drive in a straight line over woops or whatever you want to call them. If you want to do some great riding, let me know, you can join us or I can possibly point you in the right direction.

I ride a lot in Sanford and Abbot Mountain. Sanford is unbelievable, you can ride all day and not hit the same trail. I used to go over to Ridlin Rd in Berwick, before I started riding in Sanford. I live about a mile and a half from Key Auto on Rt 108, jcnhwildcat we should meet up some time. I live on the Dover/Somersworth border. Forums are great for meeting new people to ride with, I met a guy on the Highlifter Forum and he rides with us now. Ridlin Rd is a great place if you guys want to ride for half a day, but Sanford is awesome. The guys I ride with know the area in Sanford extremely well, usually I get pretty turned around during the ride. jcnhwildcat, my neighbors rode from Rollingsford to Dover about a month or so ago, I couldn't believe you could ride from there all the way back to my house. They had to ride the rode a little bit, but nothing crazy they said. To ride in Sanford, take Rt 4 North to Rt 109, take a left and you can offload behing VIP. I ride with a pretty big group and we generally offload at a friends house where we can pick up a trail. Fair warning, there are game wardens everywhere, get registered in Maine. You can register online or go to Kittery Trading Post located in Kittery, ME just off of 95.

Hey,
I went to Derry today the trails were good for ATVs. Its not a bad place to go we went all the way to freemont, and still could have gone further.
There were a bunch of trails off the main trail too,we hit a couple of those.

I used to ride the Depot about 4-5 years ago. There were no restrictions on quads, 2 nice sand pits and plenty of trails off the main drag. I just recently got back into riding this system of trails and found that most of that is now gone. There are still some trails that are off the main trails, but the 2 pits are gone and some of the main trail has been closed to ATVs. The trails bureau site needs to be updated some.
You can only ride ATVs from the intersection of Rt 28 East into Hampstead and Fremont. The trail west of 28 is closed to ATVs now. Which isn't cool since it's so nice to just park at the Depot parking lot. There is a small dirt parking lot at the junction of 28; you cross over 28 and continue on East. There is still plenty of trail to ride, but it's not nearly as nice as it used to be. I really miss the 2 pits (there is now a neighborhood in one of them).
Anyone know of any other legal trails in the Derry/Windham/Salem area?
