Coming from the south, from Baker Calif. which is on the I-15, you take hwy 127 north for about 45 minutes. The dunes are off to the east of the highway.
Coming from the north, from Las Vegas which is on the I-15, you take a highway east to Pharump Nevada. (Sorry I don't have a map in front of me.) It might be Nevada hwy 372 maybe, which becomes the Calif. Hwy 178 at the border. The 178 will run into the 127, and take that south to the dunes. They will be off to the east.
First off, Dumont is in the middle of nowhere. This is the full on desert and not even slightly like Onario! There are no towns or facilities anywhere near. The camping area has a couple of pit toilets, and nothing else. Most important, there is NO WATER.
In one of your other posts, I think you said you are coming in February, as I recall. February weather is usually nice (maybe high 40's at night and 70's in the day), but keep in mid that anything can happen! It could rain and there might be flash floods. It could snow and be bitterly cold. It could be in the 90's and you will fry in the hot sun without an easyup for some shade. The desert is mostly VERY windy (that's what creates the dunes). Be prepared for anything and everything!!! Most folks in the southwest have toy hauler trailers (100 gallon water tanks are standard equipment), and for very good reason! What do you have for life support??? Are you in tents? Do you have a trailer or motorhome? Do you have 4wd??? How long you going to be here?
Got to ask why you have your heart set on Dumont? I personally don't like Dumont all that well. The dunes are very TALL, but the riding area is relatively limited. You climb the huge hills, get to the top, and ride back down.......gets old real fast for me! It just doesn't have the variety and massive riding area that Glamis has to offer (and one day of Glamis is all I care for at a time). In four more hours drive you could be in Glamis, which is a much better experience in my opinion! Think about that alternative, or at least ride both seeing you are coming so far. Hey, another 6 hrs. drive and you could experience Pismo!
There is lots of great desert cross-country riding as well. Personally, this is my personal favorite! I get bored with the dunes pretty quick. Might want to bring your regular tires (besides paddles) and check out some other areas as well???
Keep in mind that any place will be EXTREMELY crowded on a big weekend. Ride during the week, for some peace and solitude.

Some dune links that might help!

If you want to try some cross-country riding, I suggest Rasor Rd. which is near Baker Calif. (not that far from Dumont) or Ocotillo Wells, which is near Glamis.

Thanks for the response the only reason i was considering dumont was because i heard it was the best and from what u told me i am thinking i want to go to Glamis.
when i go i will be tenting all the way from ontario cuz being 17 i cant afford one of thoes nice toy haulers. my truck is a 1994 dodge dakota 2wd with a V8 magnum in it and hopefully there wi be enough room for everything with out haveing to take a trailer.

Figure out what route you are going to take to get here. If you come down from the north (like down I-15 thru Las Vegas), you might as well spend a couple of days at Dumont, it's right on your way. If you take a more southern route (like I-40 or I-10), which you might very well want to do so you don't have to cross the Rockies in winter, Dumont will be more out of your way.
Glamis is more civilized than Dumont. There is a store, and a town not that far away. I think they have quad rentals somewhere out there. But again, all you have are pit toilets, and no water. At either place, if it is windy you are going to spend a miserable time sqatting in your tent. I have spent some very cold nights at Dumont! On the other hand, Glamis is low desert and rarely ever gets very cold.
If you do Glamis and want to take a day off to go to Ocotillo Wells (it's about an hour drive away), we could get a group together and meet you there and give you a tour. Ocotillo has water (at the ranger station) and showers.
The desert is spectacular in the winter!
