The section of forest service road 3N34 between Deep Creek and Crab Flats had been closed since the fire. In addition, the bridge over Deep Creek washed out last winter. But, all is well now and the bridge is fixed and the road is open to traffic.

This section is particularly technical, and best done on a dirt bike or utility. I have done it on the 400EX in the past (I had to get off and lift the bike over the occasional rock), but that was before the winter rains. Word is that it is way worse (better!) than it was in past years.

Visit this area, especially the single track trails around Pinnacles staging area. It is the best riding in So. Calif., IMO!

Yes and no. The riding that is right there at the exit is pretty lame. All you have available there is a couple of real tame fire roads. But, it is the exit you take to the Miller Canyon staging area, which is near Silverwood Lake. From there, you can access the trails behind Lake Arrowhead.

Get a set of free OHV maps, by calling the numbers listed on the web site. I like to stage from Miller Canyon, near Silverwood. From there you can ride a bunch of fire roads up to hwy 173, then across to Pinnacles and a bunch of great trails.

Rode the Deep Creek to Crab Flats section of 3N34 yesterday, on the 400EX. Normally I would pick a utility for this ride, but the EX with DG full chassis and swingarm skid plates did remarkably well. In fact, I love the EX for technical work (I do have it geared down for trails riding). Don't shy away from this trail just because you don't have a utility. Go give it a try!

Have not been to 1N17 lately. I use to ride it all the time on a sport bike, but the rains turned it into pretty much a 4X4 trail. Sometimes they do trail maintenance and clean it up a little, but I have no current information.
