No dont ride the hatfeild trails. They charge a fortune, and have to many rules! There is all kinds of places to ride that is much better than the hatfeild trails you can ride for free. Im originally from WV and the hatfeild trails used to be just open to the public for free before they leased all the land just to make a dollar. Just north of Bluefeild near Crumpler is a place you can unload for $2 at hilltop and ride forever. Places out in the middle of know where like the WAGON WHEEL you can stop and get fuel, hot food & drinks. Other places around that area that you can unload for free. Just hard to explain how to get there! 04-22-06 we rode 82 miles in one day and hardly even seen the same trail. There are other places just like this one. Half of WV is owned by land companies that dont care if you ride. Just like what the hatfeild trails used to be. BOYCOTT them punks for that crap. Try to avoid going into open active mine sites though. Be glad to help more if I can. GOOD LUCK !!!

I've never been to H/M Trails, However, I must agree with others here so far. I just returned from a stay at the Wagon Wheel with 10 other of my Yankee friends. We had the best time in the Pinnacle Creek reclamation area just outside Bluefield, WV. It was a long drive for us , 18 hours, but the riding was by far the best we have ever seen. As stated before, it was totally free and nobody bothered us!! Hooray!!, not that we did anything to warrant being watched. We "hooked up" with some locals who showed us around for a few days. The nicest folks you ever met down there!

The trail system went on for ever and even after five days of riding we barely scrathed the surface. The riding offers something for everyone, litterally. Many old logging roads, up and down the mountains. Lots of hill climbs and decents and some scary things most sane folks wouldn't dare.

If your looking for a nice getaway that isn't a commercial racket. Then yes you should try this area. Some common sense rules should always apply. But some places are becoming over regulated police states. Just my honest opinion!

Howdy Polariseater,

Let me make sure I understand. You're saying that the Wagon Wheel area is not part of Hatfield & McCoy, right? I don't know why but I thought it was. You know any similar places further up in W.Va? I've read alot of threads on "ATVWV.com" but it sounds like you really need to know someone in order to ride since most of the land is privately owned. Its really disappointing that a state with so much land doesn't have more riding in the National Forests.

Yep, Wagon Wheel and Wyoming County are not part of H/M Trails. There are lots of trails and if you don't know the area you could get lost for a while. Our first day; we followed a 40 mile poker trail that was marked off by green and orange ribbbons on trees. (You should also becareful on some of the mud holes. Deep, rela deep) A real nice run that took us most of the day with stops for lunch, water and minor repairs. Other than that we had some locals show us the way. I suggest you "hook up" with some of the locals if you can. It made all the difference in the world for us.

Don't mess with H/M. Wagon Wheel, Windmill Gap, Hill Top and Pinnacle Creek have the best riding anywhere around. We just got back today for our 15th trip or so. take a look at some of the pics at the link below.
