Can anyone tell me why everyone camping at pismo put a barrier on the side of their rigs that face the ocean? I assume its for high tide or even wind, but since im going there with my new rv, im not certain what to do. (I've been there 4 years every July but never to camp on the beach)

 

If they are parked on the waterline, it's a feeble attempt at keeping their rigs dry. Here's a hint, park HIGHER than the water line. [img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif[/img] A lot of people also use it as a wind break. The airflow under the vehicles (esp. when it's WINDY) actually blows the sand out from under the vehicle. This can be BAD. Like for example a truck is parked next to a TH and the sand gets blown out from under the tires and main jack. The stabilizers too. It comes crashing into the truck. Using a tarp or custom skirt on the bottom sides of the trailer, this can be prevented. You can also use plywood. One thing to watch is that the wind will blow the sand around and can cause the board to actually slip off. Lately my friends have been using tarps with ratched tie-downs. Then bury the bottom side of the tarp under a foot of sand.

Usually the spring, especially in May, is bad for this.

I was pretty sure about the reason, but now Im bit worried staying on the beach overnight. What do you think about the RV parks or the campgrounds off Pier ave like Ocean Breeze Rv park the actual camground? Thanks

 

There are several campgrounds, like North Beachor Oceano, which is on the way in on the second or main entrance that are close, only thing is you need another vehicle to take your stuff down on the beach.. The stream hasn't really been an issue these last few years, but the more people that go on the beach tend to tear up the sand so you need to keep moving. If you go past sand highway, the water table doesn't get up to far if you camp away from the surf...There are lots of Motor Homes and trailers out there, and it does get windy some months, so just be prepared.. I've been going up there since 1980, and we usually do both, stay on the beach, or get a campground, but the campgrounds fill up quick....When you drive down the beach you can see that it curves, so the 1st part is closer to the water because the dunes are behind you, and as you drive down the dunes drop back farther so you have more places to camp away from the waves.....
