Which H/M trail is right for me,and another question
#1
We are heading to the Hatfield McCoy trails in August and I need to know which trails would be right for us. we will be riding 2up with the wives,so nothing major agressive..Where is some nice places to stay. Also,,what would be considered a 2up quad,,is this enforced heavily. I would be taking a 03 Kodiak with a built in seat,,would this be legal.

mrtool2u,
Are you going to HMT's for the labor day weekend event? I posted questions about it but no one responded with an answer. I suppose no one here has ever been before. I have made my reservations and if you are planning to go that weekend I would suggest making your reservations now. I believe that weekend is filling up fast.
Good Luck,
Mud

Madmuddin,,no we were not planning on Labor day,,in fact it looks like we will not go at all if the 2up quad thing is strictly enforced.. So let me get this straight,,,,from what I have read a lot of guys have been there with kids that are not within their age or size brackets and that is generally overlooked,,but a 43 year old guy and his wife will not be legal putting down the trails...Can anyone else shed any light on this...

if you can ride the way you intend i would say that the one to the far north ,little coal? OK so i don't remember the name ,its an easy ride but rooming could be abit difficult. i think if i were you I'd go to wagon wheel .i dont think you'll run into any hassles down there. or theres black mt in KY they dont seam to care what you do there.

You can review the HMT rules here. The manufacturers warn you not to carry a passenger on a regular ATV and the HMT generally seems to incorporate the manufacturers recommendations (including the age restriction) into their rules.
Pinnacle Creek and Little Coal River are the easiest of the Hatfield McCoy trail systems (there are currently 5). There are businesses in the area that rent quads and I believe at least one of them has 2 seaters available. The quads designed from the ground-up as 2 seaters have a longer wheelbase and would be less prone to getting light in the front end (very important on some of the trails down there!)...

2tv is correct, the longer wheel base is a big plus on some of those hills. I have ridden both types and the 2up quads don'r even start to feel like there come up in the front end.

Mrtool2u, I don't think I can list the names of those businesses as it would be against the rules of this forum. However if you go to the Hatfield McCoy website (trailsheaven.com - go to "Accommodations" then to "Outfitters - ATV Guided Tours and Rentals"), you will find what you are looking for quickly. You can also find more H/M info on quadcrew.com...

I live in the area and have ridden all the local H/M trails. I have ridden 2 up on ATVs several times and also took a full race ready CRF450 on the trails a few times. Luckily I was never questioned or stopped.. but I live nearby and if they tell me to go home its no big deal.. On the other hand I have heard some horror stories of guys driving long distances and not being allowed to ride due to spark arrestors or other rule infractions.. so just be aware that on any given day the rulebook may hinder you. Just up the road from H/M off the Julian Exit is a trail system called IVY that locals go to. It is very comparible to Little Coal and is alot more riding.. with no rules or regulations. It is kept up by the locals and all trails are fun and very natural. There are lots of other trails around here better than H/M.. if you want to venture. Any questions feel free to ask or drop me a PM.
