Anybody been there, can give a description or opinion? I read somewhere that there were two ride areas, one that was more like a dirt track, and the other trail riding that you can get to right from the camping site itself.

Redmond is not a very good area. There's only one area there, the place that has 2 areas is Tuttle Creek (north of Manhattan). At Redmond it is basically entirely flat.. several trails just winding through really tall weeds and sunflowers.. I went there this summer to try as a new place, got bored really fast. There are 2 piles of crushed rock in the parking lot (which i can only assume is usually empty as we found it), on one .. you could double jump on it... that was the elevation change of the area.. lol.. although.. it was quick to get to the lakeshore. very shallow run out into it.. i went out about 50 ft at one spot before getting to my floorboards on the trailblazer just checking the depth.

Summary: Small area, flat landscape, difficulty: none, quick to get to the waters edge
Rating: 2/10
Recommend: No

by the way: Tuttle Creek that I mentioned for the 2 riding areas. The atv/bike only part is at the east end of the dam, it is about 45 acres (i guess was once at 90 but they closed the spillway section), its okay. But the other section, the OHV park is 310 acres. Its a lot of fun, there are also 4x4 jeeps and trucks in that area as well being its full OHV park. It is a lot of fun, some big hills, shoreline, woods, etc. It is a bit rocky. Most of it is to rough or rocky too ride wide open through, but there are still plenty of areas to get cranking.

If u want to know about other areas nearby or if you know of some, e-mail me at goldtoesox@yahoo.com maybe we could meet up sometime at one.

i should also mention that the 2 areas at tuttle creek are NOT connected, they are on almost completely different ends of the lake... and it is a Loooong lake
when u look towards the dam where the atv park is from the ohv park... the water is the horizon line.. cant see the dam from there.. soo.. certainly not connected.

Hi,
I would have to agree with most of what was said about John Redmond reservior. Although, if you are by yourself out there, it can be fun. Be aware that the weeds are really tall right now and sight distance is limited. It would be easy to run into somebody around some of the corners. Terrain is flat with only a few small hills. Hope this helps.

Guys, I found some text I had collected from two different internet sites, when I was first trying to get an idea of where to ride in KS. I don't remember where the second came from. And I swear I remember reading some entry that said that you could get to the ATV trail directly from the campground. These descriptions don't sound like what you guys have seen. Do you remember the name of the area where you rode?

"Two popular areas are the Otter Creek Off-road Vehicle Area and the Hickory Creek Trail. The Otter Creek ORV area is located at the west end of the dam and provides 140 acres of trails for dirt bikes and ATVs. The area is open from sunrise to 1/2 hour after sunset. The Hickory Creek Trail is a multi-use trail for the hiker, horseback rider, and mountain biker. The trail length is currently 11 miles but with the placement of two crossings on branches of Hickory Creek it is planned to double the length of the trail, as time and manpower allows. Bridges have washed out due to recent floods. Riders/hikers will have to ford the creek at suitable locations upstream."
(www.racewayatv.com/atv-blog/ 2005/08/kansas-atv-trails.html) (this page is a year old)

"Damsite Park is situated on the upstream side of John Redmond Dam and Reservoir. It offers three group campgrounds, sand swimming beach, two playgrounds, shower house with flushing toilets, trailer sanitary dump station, and boat launching ramps. A total of 32 campsites with water and electric hook-ups, picnic tables with individual shelters, fire ring and cooker are provided. Easy access to the 9400 surface-acre lake is easily obtained from this park. Two trailheads for the 16-mile Hickory Creek Hiking/Equestrian Trail are located in the park. Reservations must be made at least 2 days in advance. This campground requires a 2 day minimum stay on weekends. The campground is open year round, with services available during the peak season, April 1-October 31."

I believe the name of the area I rode in is called Otter Creek ORV park. This is the same spot that has the rocks piled up in the parking lot. As far as I know, there is no way to get from the ORV area to a camping area via ATV. In fact, the ride area is right next to the hunting area. Truthfully, I wouldn't mind riding there if the weeds weren't such an issue. In the early spring it isn't too bad.
