It's probably the locals. There's a small riding area by me and the residents don't mind the locals riding, but the minute a vehicle parks there, they call the sheriff. It might not be fair, but that's the way it is.
Also, if there's only a few machines the Maybrook police aren't going to send a patrol car over. If there's not too many quads riding there it won't be an issue. Talk to the owners of the Roadhouse restaurant. They might know.

I've seen everything from a verbal warning to confiscating the ATV. It all depends -
-Is the sheriff having a bad day?
-Is his boss after him because the residents are after his boss?
-Are the trespassers giving the sheriff a hard time?
It's kind of like being pulled over for speeding - you don't always get a ticket even tho you were speeding. We used to ride the New Paltz power lines every w/e and one day the law showed up and told us we couldn't ride there anymore. We thanked him for not taking our machines and we've never been back.
I don't know where you're from, but Orange County (where Maybrook is) might be different. I know that the DEC in Maybrook is pretty strict if you end up in the Stewart buffer zone esp if your machine isn't reg'd and ins'd. I can't tell you what the Maybrook police would do b/c I have no idea.
