I go to Silver Lake about 10 to 15 times a year since I live a hour's drive away from there. I have never been to any other dunes, so I can't compare it to another place. It is not a huge park- I think it is only 450 acres. There is a lot of variety within that area: you have about five large razorback dunes in a row; there are flat open areas where people line up to drag; there are smaller rolling dunes with trails through trees and dense brush; and there is a long beach area along Lake Michigan. It can get extreemly busy on holiday weekends- even normal weekends. There are so many people trying to get in on the weekends that they have gone to a weekends-only voucher system. Check the DNR web site for the state of Michigan for details on Silver Lake and the voucher system. There are lots of places to camp in the local community. They even have major rock concerts at a local outdoor venue.

Overall I'd say its worth a trip, especially if you've never been to the dunes. You'll see some crazy machines and people if you go on the weekend.

Oh yeah, you were asking about the drive- I figure it would be 8 to 9 hours from Toronto.

It is very good for jumping. There are plenty of opportunities to air it out. Personally, I don't like to jump the big razorback hills because you get so high. Most of the dunes aren't razorbacks - I like the smaller rounded top hills.

TrailMix,
I live in Sidney, Oh. - just picked up my new ds, while Steve got his Raptop 2 mon. ago. Most of our riding buddies have 400ex's or quadracers. Thinking of making a MI trip this next yr when the snow melts. What info do I need to make this a good trip.....Hotels close by? Need a whip? Special things to bring? Thanks, Doug

NewDSLover, there are hotels, campgrounds, and cottages for rent all around Silver Lake. It is a small town that lives off of tourism and summer-time residents. There are three performance shops near the entrance of the park, they will have anything you might need- you can get flags, parts, paddle tires, race gas, clothing, tools, free compressed air, etc. If you need something for your machine, they'll probably have it or can get it overnight.
