Default Best Place to Camp around Iron County Trails in WI

My pops and I are working on putting together a trip to Iron County this weekend and were curious what the best campgrounds are. We'd really like on on a lake with trail access, but I realize that being the 4th this weekend, we won't have much of a choice. But I'd still like to know which ones are the nicest.

Thanks.

Oh, and any pointers on where to check out on that massive trail system would be greatly appreciated!

How did the trip go? What did you find out? I live in northern Illinois and would love to add northern WI to my list of places that I have ridden. Thanks

The trip went well! It started off rough though. We camped at Frontier Campground which wasn't bad. If I were to do it again, I would have gone the 5 extra miles to camp on Lake Superior at the Saxon Harbor campground. Frontier and Saxon Harbor campgrounds both had direct trail access but are on the far north side of the system. Saxon is actually the furthest north point.

But anyways, we got there Friday around dinner time and decided to ride up to Superior for the sunset. Well we got about a mile down the dirt road, and the front u-joint on the rear drive shaft exploded on my dad's outlander. So I had to run back to camp and get the trailer to bring it back. No parts stores really in the area, and definitely none open on the 4th. So we looked at the supporting businesses on the back of the map and saw a rental place. We went there in the morning (it was in Hurley, WI) and we caught the guy there. He wasn't open, just happened to be there grabbing something. But he let us rent his last ATV which was an 09 Sportsman 500 HO. Ran awewsome for my dad the whole time, then he rolled it doing a powerslide in a big sandpit about a mile from camp after about 12 hours of riding! Luckily the guy didn't notice the scratches! Lol

But the trails were cool. Real pretty area up there. Their trail mileage claim is kind of a bluff though. If you look at the map, you'd think wow, tons of trails. But all of the ATV routes are dirt roads, which aren't terribly exciting. The trails they did have though were really nice. I wouldn't go on my DVX again though. I'd want something with IRS. The trails are exceptionally rough. I had wicked arm pump by the end of the day. The trails aren't challenging though, just really rough. Some of the really long straight trails you see on the map though are old railroad grades, which are the worst. They are just endless miles of moguls.

We stopped at a trail-side restaraunt in Hurley for lunch called the Old Time Saloon (I think) and it had the best pizza I think I've ever had. So I highly recommend that place.

Overall, it was fun. Good trails when you could get on some real ones! I'm glad we went, but I don't know if i'd make the trip again anytime soon. I'll post some pics later, I'm on my phone right now, haha.
