Where to ride in states surrounding MN?
#1
We live in central MN, and we have a lot of great ATV trails, Spider Lake, Pine Center, Two Inlets and Round River, all around 1 hour away from where I live. We go to Nemadji once a year too and stay. We would like to go on a trip to another state to check out some new trails. My in-laws have been out west and enjoyed it, but said it was better when the elk were more abundant. I would love to check out Hatfield-McCoyt in WV, but helmets are required, and that is a turn off. Are there any great trails in Michigan, Wisconsin, Southern Canada, or any other state that isn't more than a 12-18 hour drive from central MN, that offers a variety of great scenery, but fun trails (mud is enjoyable for me, scenery for my family)? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

There are quite a few trails in Wisconsin. We enjoy going to Black River Falls. Also, we have been to Monroe, Wi.
Your comment about helmets is perplexing. It seems that most public trails require helmets. I think you will be very limited in riding options at state public riding locations.

Iron River trails in northern Wisconsin is a great trail system, you can camp, stay in town, rent a cabin, all with trail access, no trailering once you arrive. My son and I spent several years camping for a week at a time at Tri Lake Timbers, which has RV, tent and cabins, plus a lot of permanent trailers. Great trails, not much for mudding, but twisty, some steep, great scenery, and well marked trails with signs and mileage at most intersections. Too bad they closed the Open 26, a huge sand pit with dozens of trails, hill climbs and play areas, almost 30 acres of fun, but as usual, the mentally deficiant party groups took advantage of a nice area, and got it closed off. But anyway, that is a great spot to ride, you can easily put on 100 miles a day if you want, and hardly ever cross the same trail twice, there are so many of them out there.
And as far as helmets... if they bug you that much, try a nice open face, or even a half helmet, that way you are legal, protected, and don't have the full face helmet. I personally will not ride without one, all it takes is a kicked up rock (with the way my son and I ride, we kick up plenty) or a branch whip to the head to ruin a nice ride, not to mention any of the kids getting hurt.
