Hi everyone! Hope the new year found you all well.

We saddled up the bikes and went for a ride today. I took a few pictures along the way. We went up around the Cove Mtn.-Durfee area (for anyone familiar with the area).

These parts of the Paiute trail are about 10 min. from my house.

Best wishes!

Hey ER,

Happy New Year
Man I tell ya 7 more years at the most and I'll be a Richfield area resident. Great pictures of your ride today, my family and I thoughly enjoyed them also of the jambo. I need to load up all my Jambo pics from the last three years and let everyone take a look. I'm sure I 've met you before even in just passing or on one of the rides. I tell ya I can't wait to get over there this year. Just waiting for the site to be completed and all the info updated, so I can register.

Have fun in your winter wonderland!!!!

Thanks for the pics – just in time to feed the need for something to look at rather then the frozen swamps and flat lands of Minnesota. For those interested, your referencing the Cove Mountain / Durfee area allowed me to pull up the topo maps off of the DeLorme Topo USA program and see exactly where your talking about. Elevations and gps coordinates and 3-D maps. OK – enough commercial.

The reason I point out the Topo maps is that I have every intent to load up the 3 quads and take a family vacation to the Paiute ATV trail area. I’ve spent hours tracing the trails on the Topo maps with the routes shown on the National Geographic Trail Illustrated maps. I’ve bought the book “Paiute ATV Trail System” and can’t wait for the moons and stars to align so I can make the trip out there. Some of the unresolved items I’m working on are the logistics for where to stay (have tailgator trailer) and how/when to re-jet the carbs. (Polaris 500 HO, 325 Trail Boss and 90 Sportsman.) We’ve taken all three to 9600 feet on Mount Independence in Montana - and that is just about the limit for the smaller machines.

Maybe you can help answer some questions I have? I’m hopeful to find a longer packed camping trip that keeps us on the trails and tenting for 4 days (3 nights). Can you camp anywhere along the trail or only at designated areas? I need more information as to when this would be best – weather wise. I have kids in school so I was looking after June 6th and before September 3, 2002. Also, some trails are identified as “most difficult”. I’m looking at doing something with a trailer behind the ATV to pack all the gear and supplies. Are these trails to difficult to traverse with a trailer in tow? (something like the mountain goat trailer) Also – is two up riding prohibited in UT?

Thanks in advance

Earhtraper: I envy your location. Wife and I did the Paiute a year ago and had a ball! We will be doing it again this fall, but plan on just going on the western side. Have a lot of riding in Colo. but would love to ride out the back door on the Paiute. Daughter lives in Kanab and we have a new grandson we havent seen.

Earthraper,
Not to familiar with the Durfee area. what part of the trail is it located. I have been on most of the trail now but don't remember that part. Cool Pictures though. I went out to Cherry Creek over Christmas and had a fun ride.

WhoDatinDaMud,
To answer some of your questions: The best time to go is end of July or anytime during August. By this time the whole trail is open. The highest part of the trail is the Tushar mountains at almost 12,000 feet. The best time to re-jet is when you reach your staring point. which will be around 4,500 feet. yes you can camp anywhere on the trail you want. However there are plenty of campgrounds/lakes along the trail that you can camp at. Most of these area's are free and provide a restroom which I am sure the wife and kids will appreciate. The only thing you need to call ahead to the local ranger station is the fire restrictions. Depending on our spring and summer weather there may be fire restrictions which says that you can only build fires in designated area's.
If you want you can camp down in the towns or stay in a Hotel. Fillmore, Richfield, and Salina are the bigger towns along the trail. These towns have plenty of places to stay and eat. Marsyvale is a popular place too but it is not very big and only has a couple of ammenities. Liz & Charlies (in Marysvale)has a place to pitch a tent or park a trailer. He also has showers that you can use. Its really nice to clean up after a days ride.
The more difficult trails marked in black on the maps are okay. You can take a trailer on most of them if you have a 4X4 quad doing the towing. The only trail that wouldn't allow you to have a trailer on is trail 66. Commonly refered to as trail 666. The start and ending are okay but the middle section is a steep narrow ravine with boulders bigger than your ATV. You have to maneuvor around these boulders.
I am not aware of any laws prohibiting the double riding. I see it all the time I even do it with my kids.

hey Bearman,

did they put all the new rides for this year in your packet, I haven't sent off for mine yet but will now that I know they are ready. when I called over in dec Carma said they weren't ready yet.

so you too are looking for a new home in Richfield cool! have you started looking for a house yet? we have ours up for sale right now and will probably take part of the equity and go buy over there this year . so what do you ride? I was over this past year on a red '02 grizzly if you were there in '99 my wife and I were the honeymoon couple that carma gave a basket to. as I'm writing this my wife just handed me a letter from the people who have taken over the jamboree. so I guess will be sending off our request for the packet. anyway I too wish it were tomorrow but hey I'll settle for going to Pismo I'm leaving in the morning. see ya at the jambo

My wife and I were in the newspaper supplement that came in the goodie bag, in the picture I am on a Bombardier DS650 and my wife is on a Honda 400 ex which she has since sold and bought a Kawasaki Praire 650. What part of California are you from? we live in Orange County. Yes all the rides for 2002 are included in the packet and are on the website. We probably wont sell our house here for 2 more years but we are being looky lous at the houses in Richfield every year. Hope you have a safe ride at Pismo
