NORTH CAROLINA Riding Spots
The only publicly managed OHV trail systems in our State are located on lands managed by the U.S. Forest Service. They include:
Uwharrie Area 15 miles Montgomery County 910-576-6391
Wayehutta Area 18 miles Jackson County 828-526-3765
Brown Mountain Area 38 miles Burke/Caldwell 828-652-2144
Upper Telecom Area 37 miles Cherokee County 828-837-5152
I suggest that you contact the U.S. Forest service at the numbers provided for opening and closing dates, trail maps and for rules and regulations.

You may also want to contact the Cape Hatteras National Seashore at 252-473-2111. They allow street legal vehicles to drive on the beach. You may want to contact Cape Lookout National Seashore at 252-728-2250. They allow off-highway vehicles/atvs to ride on the beach and on a road behind the frontal dunes but you must have your vehicle ferried to Cape Lookout

Wayehutta (Worry hut)
Easy riding, 30 miles

Cullowhee, North Carolina
This is a legal trail system in Jackson County, North Carolina. It has 18 miles of trails, 3 miles more than the Uhwarrie ORV area. The trails are located in the southwestern part of the State, not far from its borders with South Carolina and Georgia. The system is maintained by the Smokey Mountain ORV Club, which does a fine job in conjuction with Nantahala National Forest. The trails are well designed and maintained.
Directions: Nearest to Sylva N.C., take I-40 to HWY 19/23, HWY 23 to HWY 107, South on 107 to Old Culleowhee HWY 1002, 1002 to state road 1732. Follow into Wayehutta Riding area.
My Directions: The trails are at the end of Wayehutta Road near Cullowhee. Take Wayheutta Road in Cullowhee and keep going several miles, may of which are through "Jerry Springer" country. Wayehuta Road ends at the ORV Parking area. There is an off-loading ramp there, as in other NC

Brown Mountain Trails
Moderate to Strenuous, 40 miles
Outside Morganton, North Carolina
Directions
Brown Mountain ATV riding area is currently closed for the winter and will re-open in the spring. These directions are from I-40 exit 105 at Morganton N.C. Those of us from the Raleigh N.C. area alternate between I-40 West and Rt 64 west. Both are good routes and offer lots of places to stop for gas and munchies. Once arriving at exit 105 off of I-40 in Morganton we recommend you gas up and think about those last minute items you might need. From I-40 exit 105 at Morganton turn right onto Rt 18, continue to Rt 181 and continue straight for about 15 miles (give or take).. Landmarks to look for as you get close are Rose Creek camping (on the left) and a very small country gas station on the right just before you turn at Brown Mountain Beach road. There is a small white church at the intersection of Rt 181 and Brown Mtn Beach Rd which is a good landmark. Turn right on Brown
Mtn Beach Rd and continue for about 4 miles. Look for a small bridge, then turn left into the entrance of the Riding area. There is a self service fee area; fee is $5.00 a day per rider and a season pass is available. Continue on up the mountain to the top parking lot. The entire parking lot is open for primitive camping should you desire to spend the night and partake in some excellent night riding. There are restrooms and a fresh water pump as ammenities. Check all nuts and bolts before spending time riding at Brown Mtn. As always, recommend someone in the group of riders carry all the necessary safety and repair items (tire patch, compressor, etc).

Tellico ORV
Moderate to Very Difficult, 80 miles
North of Murphy, North Carolina
The Upper Tellico area is a high-elevation basin formed by the Unicoi Mountains. It is one of only a few areas in the National Forest in North Carolina where off-road vehicles may be used. The ORV trails are a network of old logging roads and skid trails that range from "easy" to "most difficult". The trails are open to all uses--trail bikes, all terrain vehicles, and four-wheel drive vehicles, except one trail that's open to ATV use only. Some badly-eroded routes have been closed to allow the land to heal and to protect water quality.
DIRECTIONS: From Murphy, go north on NC 1326 (Joe Brown Highway) for 2.8 miles. Turn right on NC 1331 for 5.5 miles. Turn right on NC 1337 (Davis Creek Road). Go 5 miles to the top of the mountain and Allen Gap staging area. (NC 1337 becomes a gravel road--FR 420.)

Buckleberries Recreational Area
Directions
From the Raleigh/Clayton area take highway 70 east. At each 70 split take the left exit (bypass). Approaching Selma N.C. continue on the 70 bypass, crossing I-95. Continue east past two stoplights. Your landmark for your next turn is a billboard with a man swinging from the bottom. Approximately 1/4 mile past this billboard turn right at Stevens Chapel road. There is a vegetable stand on the corner of Stevens Chapel for a landmark. Drive all the way to the end ( Brogden Rd.) and turn left. Continue for approximately 8 miles past two concrete bridges at Moccason and Racoon swamps. Go
approximately 1/2 mile to the first dirt road to the right at an old barn with a faded Buckleberry Lakes sign. Continue 1/2 mile to the first dirt road to the left. This leads to an old sandpit and is the first of two
riding areas. Follow the dirt road around to the left for parking and unloading. To get to the second and larger of the two riding areas return to the dirt road and go left approximately two miles. Paid admission allows you use of both parks. Watch for what appears to be a sign in the middle of the road. Turn left into the long dirt drive and continue to the open parking area. There will be a small fishing lake to your right as you enter the park. Buckleberry's will have an attendant to collect fee's and welcome you. We recommend first time riders at Buckleberry's allow enough time in your riding day to try both riding parks as each park has it's own
advantages.
Buckleberry's charges $5 per rider and $5 for each ATV.
Note: These directions are from west of Buckleberry's. Travelers going west on highway 70 may find it easier to follow highway 70 west past the town of Princton, turning left at Stevens Chapel Rd and continue as described above. There are direct shortcuts through the town of Princeton; however, I recommend a local map guide you through town.
I-95 travelers exit 93 at Brogden road and continue as above.

South Peddlars Mountain Trails
Directions
The South Pedlar ATV trail system is currently closed for the winter. Pedlars Mountain has wide trails and great overlooks. These trails are ideal for the most novice rider, however offer little challenge to the more experienced.
From central N.C. take Hy 29 north to Lynchburg.
From Raleigh, N.C. take Hy 501 north to Lynchburg.
Your goal is to make it to the Blue Ridge Parkway.
Hy 29 will merge with the 501 bypass west around Lynchburg. Continue on 501 to the Blue Ridge Parkway, Turn right and head north for 3 or 4 miles to the exit at Rt 130. Bear right at the Rt 130 exit and go to the stop sign. You will notice camping signs to the left; the ATV riding area is approximately 1/4 mile and clearly marked to the right. There are two entrances to the
Pedlar ATV riding area. The first is Clearly marked (Forest Rd #319), the second is about a mile down the road (Forest Rd 564), both roads will take you to the top of the mountain and the ATV parking area. There is a $5.00 fee per rider. Note: Unlike Brown Mountain ATV riding area there is NO overnight camping allowed in the parking area. There is an excellent campground about 3-4 miles from Pedlars Mtn riding area; It is Wildwood Campground and run by Brian and Denise Hess. These are fine folks and run an excellent campground. Call ahead for reservations (804) 299-5228.
To get to their campground, turn left at the Rt 130 stop sign and go up about 3 miles. Remember, from the Blue Ridge Parkway exit at Rt 130. Right takes you to the Pedlar Mtn riding area; left takes you to the campground. Enjoy your ride!!

The 311 Trails (Winston-Salem)
Directions: Take 311 towards Winston-Salem until it merges into I-40. As you round the curve of the merging lane, you can pull off onto the shoulder (before you merge onto I-40). There will be plenty of places to park and you will find a fountainhead of trails. Hopefully, Steve Thompson will GPS a map for us of the many trails, soon.

River Road in Wilmington.
Directions:Coming in off of I-40 which dumps you on College Road. Stay on College Road thru approx. 10 or 11 traffic lights. T/R (sorta goes off at a Y) on Shipyard Blvd. Hardees on the corner and Long Leaf Mall. Go to the 4th Traffic light which is Independence Blvd. T/L on Independence. Go thru 2 traffic lights (staying straight) til the road dead ends into River Road. At the stop sign turn left. Go across a bridge and travel approx 1/4 of a mile. On the left look for 2 brick pilars with chain link gates attached that are fallen down. It is a gravel road. Turn in here and there is a large power plant with ample parking along this road. Now if you are comin in from SC - come across our big metal bridge over the Cape Fear River. Go to the traffic light at the foot of the bridge and turn right. This is 3rd Street. Follow this street and at Greenfield Lake on your left it veers to the left and turns into Carolina Beach Road. At this point you will go thru approx. 5 traffic lights. Carolina Beach Road intersects with Independence Blvd at approx the 5th light. You will see a Food Lion on your left. Turn to the left and go to the end of this road which is River Road and T/Left. Same directions above to the Power Plant. We have riden there for the last 3 days straight and still havent riden all the trails. Lots of woods, sand, craters to ride down in and up out of.....etc.

There are established, unofficial areas which include:
Rural Hall Trails (Private land, permission required)
High Rock Lake - by Clay (Private land, permission required)
Steve Thompson Trails (also known as the Stokesdale Trails) - by Clay (corporate, public, and private lands: permission required)
St. James Sand Dunes (actual name - Half-Hell Swamp, known to locals as Yellow Banks)

Trails in Grifton- going from ayden towards grifton on hwy 11 south, you'll pass the ayden-grifton high school on your left and then the east carolina stockyards. about a half a mile down the road you'll see a cash and carry store on the left. turn right at that intersection, unto the hanrahan road. turn left at the first PAVED road, ww gaskins road. you'll see a very sharp curve to the left, and in that curve is a path going into the field beside the cotton gin. everyone rides the creek behind the gin, you can keep following the path on your atv. have fun and be safe
