I would schedule a half-day with mudevil off-system to ride 'no-pressure' trails and get the young rider acclimated. Then ask him what trail numbers to take that probably would fit his ability for later that day or the next (I'd probably make it a full day with mudevil myself).

BK (a seasoned rider) said it all in the topic above when he commented: "But I would not take a new rider there for anything. Even on the easy trails there are still plenty of times you are riding a foot from the edge of a shear cliff. There is not much room for error"

You might be less anxiuos, have a better time and see more things by taking a tour or two with these guys.

Another great source of info is trx450 who would probably say something similiar or give you a few trail numbers.

John

The trails are color coded as to difficulty: Green= easiest/ Blue= moderate difficulty/ Black= Most difficult. Ride any of them EXCEPT the black trails, you should be alright. See <www.trailsheaven.com>
Dingess-Rum Trails(Bear Wallow trailhead) are my favorite. Try T-10 or T-14 to warm up. Don't take the "newbie" on any of those black trails.

Just came back from Hatfield McCoy on Easter weekend. On Friday we rode Browning Fork green trails #10 & #12 with my wife, her sister, and my 11 year old nephew. The trails will travel roads that the locals drive pick up trucks on to get to gas wells an such. These roads still have steep hills on either side that would be desaster if someone would make a mistake and go over. If you look on the trail map from the Hatfield McCoy websight for this trail you will see a few areas where there are tight "S" like or serpentine sections. These are probable switchbacks up the side of a mountain and are probable the worst areas. Having said that we made it all the way around this loop which was around 40 miles without any major problems.

On Saturday my Brother in-law and I rode Buffalo Mountain all the way to Matewan and back this is also around 40 miles round trip. We rode our Polaris Scramblers this day and the switchbacks did not seem as bad on these trails as they were on Browning Fork where I rode my Motorcycle. I am not real comfortable on the motorcycle so that could be the biggest reason the trails did not seems as bad.

I have riden Dinguss Rum in the past and it is comparable to the other trails. All the trails will get rocky in some areas and muddy in others. This is my third trip down from Pa to Logan and the trip is well worth the six hour drive. The scenary is outstanding and the people are helpful and friendly. You might want to make the trip without the newbie first and then you can make the decision whether they can handle it.
