Default Places near east TN to ride?

Anyone in here know some good spots? I am headed to Tellico soon, and maybe to Prentice-Cooper. I want a spot with lots of mud, and rocks can be there too. I run a Honda Foreman 450S, so I am not worried about power in mud.

I would recommend skipping those places and going right to Windrock. It's in Oliver Springs, Tn, about 5 miles from Oak Ridge. We've come down from Michigan nine times since April to ride there. There is a couple of riders who come down from New Hampshire to ride. It's got mud. Great trails, great scenery, hill climbs...anything you need. Windrock ATV club has done an excellent job of marking the trails and maintaining them. Permit is 50.00 for the year. The Garden Plaza hotel in Oak Ridge is the best place to stay. Mention that you are riding with Windrock ATV and the rate is 55.00 per night. There is very primitive camping allowed in the parking lot. No running water or electric. If you need any other info, let me know. The place is awesome.

Hmmm.. I will go to Windrock, but I have heard Tellico is a must. Also, I noticed in your sig that you have 2 trailers and soont o have 5 4 wheelers. Do you have a rear loading trailer that holds two ATVs or a side loading that holds 2? I have been looking for one that is side loading and holds 3 full size ATV's. I know they make them, but I am not sure where they are made.

I ride with guys who have ridden Tellico. It is really more for Jeeps than quads. Windrock has rocks, but Tellico has boulders. I really think you would enjoy Windrock more, just my opinion.

I have two side loading trailers. Either side folds down so you can just drive right on. The Bearcat is a 2 place. The Triton is a three place, 12 footer. They also make a 16 foot, four place trailer. If you can afford it, buy the Triton. It is made WAAAAAY better than the Bearcat. It's all alluminum, and built very solidly. I've towed two Sportsman 500's and a Scrambler 500. It handled all that real well. It'll cost you around 2 grand though. For me, it was totally worth it. We'd like to have an enclosed trailer, but they are too heavy. I'm not sure how much my Triton weighs, but I can move it around pretty easily. Triton has a website where you can locate a dealer. You could probably have your ATV dealer order you one.

Without trying to promote another web site, go to Atvtime.com. They have a section just for Windrock. If you ask any questions, there are plenty of guys who can help you.

We're going down next weekend to spend two weeks at Windrock. I'm getting excited already.

See ya

I've been to both several times and while Windrock has more variety and miles, Tellico is worth the trip. Tellico will test your 4wd system, your atv, your ability and most important your decision making. The average trail at Tellico is more like the tougher trails at Windrock. For the most part they are no problem as long as you don't push the speed too much and pay attention, but almost every trail has at least a couple of stressful spots. It's more fun if the trails are wet, but some of the bad spots should only be attempted when dry.

Trails 2 and 9 are now closed to atv's to prevent folks from going around, while atv's have gone up both it really wasn't worth the effort especially on 2. However, I'm not sure how much the rules are being enforced and from my most recent Jeep trip in September you'd never no the ban exists. So while I'm not advocating you breaking the rules, you really need to see them. You can see Slick Rock (trail 9) easily from the top, but it is a bit of a climb back up.

Take a camera and it's best to go with 3-4 others, some of the trails like 11 (Guardrail) is nicer with a couple of strong backs and quick hands to help. You'll also need a map and although there are only about 40 miles worth of trails, I've never been able to do more than about 32 in one day. This was due to time driving to and from Chattanooga and I'm not sure how much more I could have ridden anyways. I've actually been 3 times with a total of 8 others, we've ridden 32, 20 and 21 miles respectively, and everyone and I mean everyone has been glad to see the truck at the end.

Tellico is worth a couple of trips, but after that you'll enjoy Windrock more as the trails are more relaxing. I'd say get you at least one trip under you belt and then head to Windrock to unwind a little. It has some tough trails and even some of the 'Moderate' ones have some tough spots and a little bit of everything. If you ever got to ride Aetna Mtn. before it was shut down, then you'll know alot of what to expect at Windrock.

Tellico is about 2:15hrs from Chattanooga and Windrock is 75.2 miles/ 1:30hrs from my driveway in Soddy.

Soddy eh? We just bought 50 acres on Flat Top Mtn., and we live on Lookout Mtn. I have alot of friends that have been to Tellico, and they said it was awesome. This is the first I had heard of Windrock, so I am looking forward to planning a trip up there.
