im thinking about selling my 400ex and buying a raptor but ive herd 2001's break.

 

Well, the most known problem is probably the tranny. I don't know too much about that but I have an 01 and the pick-up coil just went out for the second time. (thats a $300 part).

 

is that the only problem?

 

My 01 has been perfect since new. However If I were were you, I'd buy an 02 or newer since most 01 owners have not been as lucky as me in the transmission department.

The most expensive problem is the tranny. Also, the choke cable water/seal problem (water gets in and corrodes the plunger spring). And I believe all year Raptors have the one-way starter clutch problem.

I'd definately look for an 02 or 03 since Yam has done a pretty good job of correcting the probs with subsequent models.

Mine is the best 01 Virgin Raptor around with no problems but raptor trannie is there just in case.

The one-way starter is another problem of the Raptors not only 2001's, but all of them. This bearing rides behind the flywheel, and it is bolted to the flywheel. The starter gear, when it rotates in a certain direction it inguages the bearing locks to it and rotates the engine to start.
I have never had one-way starter failures on mine. Now since I am going through it I am replacing it.
