Default What is the negative effect of poorly adjusted valves ?

I understand that poorly adjusted valves will not provide optimum power but are there any other drawbacks ? Could too much gap (over spec) in both the exhaust and intake cause the engine to run hot ?

Thanks, Eric

Run hot? doughtful. Loose will be a little noisy and possibly cause extra wear on your valve train. Tight can cause hard starting and burnt valves.

Here's my logic on why it might run hot. If the exhaust valve has too much gap then it will open late and stay closed too long and not "release" the heat as it should. Over time the heat builds up? And if the intake does the same thing it might create a lean condition - making the problem worse.

What do ya think - am I on the right track or in left field ? Please correct me if i'm not thinking right

Yuor thinking is allright but things work backwards to what your thinking. You've heard of a EGR on a car EXHAUST GAS RECIRCULATOR the exhaust gas put back into the intake accually reduces combustion temps. As far as the intake think of it like this, anything that adds to better breathing will cause you to run leaner and loose valves cause it to breath less.

That seems to make sense. Speaking of heat how does compression fit in ? In general, will an engine whose compression is slightly low run hotter than if it's compression is right on ?

your peformance will slowly go away as the valve specs change, i found that out. Moose told me to adjust valves and he was right. runs really well again!
And on a raptor, the intakes usually tighten up, not loosen. the exhausts were ok just like he said they would be.

Now i faithfully adjust valves on a regular schedule.

and dont think so much, youll give yourself a stroke! hehe
