Today i was doin some pretty hard ridin on my 97 wolv. (mudd, hills, high speeds, water, all the good stuff)then we had to scoot down a road a bit and after doin about 45mph for about 2 min it stopped as if i had let the throttle go and just started coasting. my engine was still runnin. so i pulled off the road, looked it over and found nothin unusual. but when i got on again to try again it would start sputtering after you pushed the throttle in about half-way. so instead of staying in 1st at a low speed i had my friend on his rancher push me home (he was lovin this, makes his look better than mine and i was pissed) so we got home cleaned the air filter. still does the same thing. im kinda new at fixing stuff on my atv but this has happened a couple time now since christmas and before it would just eventually work and i didnt take it in or anything figuring it was ok. but now i think it has somethin to do with riding in high water and unless somebody here can help im gonna take it to the dealer. but it isnt under warranty anymore and money is something i dont have a lot of so if anybody has any sugesstions they would be greatly appreciated. thanks

well their could be alot of things wrong with it.

and my cuzin has a 300 fortrax and his does the same thing except i got to push him home and i luved that i am still rubbing it in his face.

check your oil and if it is real watery that is your problem and thats not very good so u need to change it as quickly as u get it in their but it is probably getting in ur breather hose if ur crossing high water so u need to relocate ur breather hose to a higher place

Did it start after riding in snow, where the snow would be powdery. THat happen to mine to I've got a 95 after it did it a few times i finally looked in the air box and that was full of water up to the bottom of the filter. It would spit and sputter any time you hit rough stuff. I also had the main jet fall out. It would run up to third throttle and then cut out.

So you were ahead of the Rancher all the way home. Where you able to stay in front before the problems occurred? Try to determine if the problem is fuel or electrical. My '97 did the same thing. If I used the choke it would run. This worked for a while. The carb got plugged with dirt from the tank or deposits from dried fuel in the bowl, don't know. Removing the carb and blowing out both jets and all the passages fixed the problem. It reoccurred until I ran another tank of gas through it.

You should check the differentials after every deep water rides. I have had water in the rear differential after long rides in deep water at a pretty good clip. This is strange as there is no oil leaking out and the seal look good. The vent setup looks weak with a plastic fitting and spring clamp that looks like it was made from a pen spring.

Good Luck

Sounds like you may have gotten water in the carb bowl.
There is usually a drain at the bottom of the bowl, just drain the carb and see if it runs better.
The problem is the water will not atomize as easily as the fuel, so it will not pass threw the main jet. It just rolls around in the bowl and blocks the fuel from flowing.
A wet air filter doesnt help either
Hope this helps

I'm not sure about the '97 but my 2000 wolverine has a switch on the rear handbrake/parking brake that if the switch is activated (like it is when the parking brake is on)the motor will only rev so high before it starts cutting out. This is a safety feature to keep you from taking off with the parking brake on.

This might be worth checking out, as I'm sure it would be an easy fix.
