First race....raptor
#1
Well guy's, yesterday I entered my first compitition with my raptor. I had been practicing a long time for this. We raced at South Woods in Monticello NY (Holiday Mountain). The weather was Great! My raptor is setup with wheel spacers, piped and jetted, Holeshots with Douglas wheels on the front. Modest I know but I'm just starting out.
Anyway the practice run went really well, except for the HUGE knot I had in my gut! The bike ran great but the track was pretty bumpy and I immediatly felt it in my hands and arms. No big deal I thought.
First moto - Lining up at the starting gate was a real eye opening experience. There were 12 riders and all were on wicked 250r's, fully modified shee's as well as some I didn't know. The oldest rider besides me looked to be about 30, the rest had to be in their 20's, I'm 43. Holy s#*t I said to myself....I'm DEAD! At the starting gate I had this overwhelming urge to crap my pants, then the gate dropped and off we went......at that point I forgot about everything except kicking *** and living to tell about it. To make a long story short I came in 9th place....YEAH BABY, that's because 3 riders crashed, but that still counts right.......
Second moto - Nerves were not as bad this time, started fine BUT!!!!! the track had become totally rutted by this time which I didn't realize and ripping into an uphill turn I caught a deep rut with my front right tire and AHHHHHHHHHH. The bike flipped over in the air and I went flying, landing on my back and rolled down the hill with he raptor rolling right behind me. When I stopped I looked up and saw it comming at me, I lifted my leg up to prevent it from burying me, but was only partly successful. ....OUCH!!!!! I busted the tie rods, a-arm, flattened the handle bars, broke the throttle box, broke off some hose, cracked my chest protector, dented my front wheels, ruined the right side plastic's and banged the hell out of my upper body (and I payed to do this!!!).
TO conclude - I'm at work this morning (barely) and must say I thank the Lord I'm ok. To tell you the truth, I can't WAIT to get back out there again!!! Hey, I came in 9th in the first moto right!!!!!!!and am pretty proud of myself ( my wife and 4 kids think otherwise). There's another race Aug 3rd, I figure I have alot of fixing and mending to do, then......I'll BE BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!! It was a GREAT DAY.
I wrote this to you all because it was this site that really helped me in this sport. All the info and support you guy's gave me helped greatly, so I figured I'd share my story, thanks again guy's.
Anyone need a cheap chest protector?

Good for you Bob, glad you had fun. I'm 37 and a first year MX rider. Despite the aches and pains, I'm also loving every minute of it. Only 4 more weeks until I get this cast off my hand:-)
Now that you've found some weak parts on your Raptor, break out the credit cards and fix it faster!!:-)

I know that feeling! i still get it before every race!
first race last year- i was on my R it was still a 250 with pipes and thats it, the 15 others were on sick 250rs, 400ex's, 2 z400's, and a couple of banshees and an lt250. I had it redlining in 2nd with the clutch pulled in ofcoarse and the gate drops... i popped the clutch and was off in 3rd place once i shifted into 4th gear like 6 or 7 bikes passed me, coming into the very first turn someone hit my back tire and i rolled, i was in last place by about 9-10 seconds. I got up and went all out...ended up in 4th
second race- got the holeshot but got passed on the first turn by a 250r and a z (the rider on the z was a sandbagger!) the guy on the 250r wouldnt jump the doubles so i wasnt able to pass him he would stay in the middle of the track so slowly but surely the z was getting more and more ahead (he was goin around doubles and hittin the turns full throttle almost rolling it on every turn!) anyways i ended up in 3rd that race
Next race is gonna be in 2weeks down here and i already got that feeling in my stomach!

Wow......that was some race. It's good to see I'm not the only one experiencing this. As mentioned above I had my credit card out all morning with Rockey Mountain ordering my replacement parts. Spending money online is almost as much fun as racing....until the bills come in of course!!!!! But at this stage in life I really dont care.......this is TO MUCH fun...right.
By the way, I left work at 3pm yesterday went home (almost couldn't walk, I was so sore) took 3 advil and a very hot bath, went to bed at 9 and today I'm ready to do it all over again!!!!
Good luck to you guy's and stay safe.
