Just call them next time before you actually go lighting gas IN YOUR GARAGE!!! LOL
Glad to hear everything is ok!
It sort of surprises me after reading your post that the fire dept. don't have a special route running and have it down to like a 5min response to YOUR house.

I about launched my shop last summer - I was using brake cleaner to clean some crud off parts and letting the run-off go into my trash can (about half full - oily paper towels and beer cans) About five minutes later I was grinding on some steel and the sparks were going right into the same trash can. About the time I thought to myself "that's not good, that might catch" - the vapors caught and POOFF -emptied the trash and burning paper towels rained down. LUCKILY, I got it all contained but I immediately grabbed my extinguisher off the wall !

I did something similar when I was 13 years old me and my brother where raking up the back yard leaves and after making a great big pile and decided to do as we seen some of our neighbor do and that was to burn there thrash, so after a match by itself wouldn't work we had the bright idea of going into the shed and getting some gasoline to help start it, so 5 gallons of gasoline later we were almost hair less from the fire/heat, we throw a lit paper with a rock in it to the pile from 10' away,(it's still so vivid) the flames/explosion traveled on the ground like a fireball blanket and scorched us. Make a long story short I now have a found respect for "flamable liquids", and crewcut hair styles
