The slides are black because they are coated with an antifriction coating. The *****/screws on top of the carb adjust the idle speed. If you turned one without turning the other at an equal amount you have tricked the throttle override system (TORS) into thinking one of the slides is stuck and it will cause the bike to run like crap. Adjust the slides so they are equal and then check the parking brake. If it's not adjusted it will kick in a rev limiter and it will not rev past that set amount. If you don't understand what I have posted take it to a dealership where they know what to do.

sounds like the slides are in backwards, there is a left and a right, the same thing happened to a friends 03 banshee.

Slides are in backwards or the TORS or parking brake switch is activated. Unplug the TORS box under the tank, near the front on the left. Make sure the parking brake switch isn't stuck - give it a few wiggles. Make sure the cut-out on the slides is towards the rear.

I'll bet money it is one of those problems.

and if all that doesn't work, last resort to the spark plug(s)

Don't forget to look for the tube connecting both carbs together. It will run like crap without it.
