Default YFZ shocks: what adjustments for less stiff ride?

I just got my YFZ (crimson and cream just like the sooners ) and I was prepared for the stiff ride but after reading the manual on shock adjustments all I see is "pre-load, rebound and compression damping" I'm not quite sure what each of those has an effect on. Basically if I want to make it a less stiff ride what part of the shock do I adjust?
