i just added a 42 tooth rear sprocket and was wondering if i can add links to chain or do i need a new longer chain, if so how much longer, thank you

 

Yes, you can add links. You'll just need to run (2) masters; (1) for the "original" break and (1) for joining the supplemental links. Hope that's understandable. If you don't have a chain breaker, go to www.rockymountianatv.com and do a search for "motion pro" and get theirs. I use it all the time and it works great. Many folks grind the pins off, but I prefer to use a purpose-built tool. You gots to use some elbow grease to get the pins moving some times, but that's all part of the fun.

Make sure to get the right type of master; o-ring or non. I'm running non o-rings (520 DID ERT) on all my machines just 'cause I like 'em. They wear quicker than o-ring, but learn to inspect/maintain them regularly and you'll be fine. I've never had a problem w/ 'em.

I always have at least (2) extra masters and some excess chain in my tool box for what ifs.

I wouldn't reccomend running more than one master line. Just seems like bad practice. A new chain if you get a conventional Non O-ring will only set you back around 40 bucks. I think forty bucks is worth good piece of mind. [img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif[/img]

I put a 43 tooth rear on mine with the stock chain. Are you sure you have the axle all the way forward?

 

I would not reccomend using two masters either. You ever seen a guy 5 miles in, pushing his quad out,,,,with a bunch of chain parts in his hand, and a cracked case.

Maybe on a raptor 50,,,,,but not a real bike.

Piece of mind is a wonderful thing. If you are buying new sprockets, you should replace the chain anyhow.

I would only recommend an O-ring chain.

The motion pro chain breaker is awesome btw,,,,be sure the pin is backed off all the way before you clamp the chain. (and then be sure the clamp is very tight, before you start tightening the pin. Those pins have a tendency to bend or jam if not used properly. I have had mine for about 10 years now, and love it still.

 

Well, obviously I'm loosing this one, but you'll never convince me that mechanically, (2) "properly installed and maintained" masters are any less sound than (1).

How many 1st time chain mechanics do you think install a chain properly, or even buy the right master to begin with.

"I didnt think it really mattered if the clip was bent , I just reused it" (heard that one before as I was towing someone out of the woods)

I learned the hard way when I was about 10.

I might do it in a pinch (I even carry a spare link of chain and new master w/me as I ride), but I would only recommend it to an enemy[img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif[/img]

 

I'm with you selector. Provided Camino69 knows how to properly install a chain, he will have no problems running two master links. We've run two on a 420 bashee asphalt dragster before as a result of their poor chain tensioning system and had no problems. A stock or nearly stock raptor won't be a problem.
