Best Raptor First Mods
#1
Ok. I pretty much decided that I am going with the Raptor instead of the YZF450. Mostly because of the price difference, lack of reverse on the 450, and the fact that I do not plan on racing moto-x. It was a very tough decision that I am STILL mulling over, but I believe when I get to the dealership I will be able to walk out with a Raptor.(unlike last night. I couldnt make up my mind so I just left to think about it some more.)
Anyway, I do not want to bother riding it stock. Right away I want to put on a new pipe. Which is the best pipe for the Raptor? I will mostly be riding in the dunes, but I will be doing some trails too (not many). So I want it set up for lots of WOT. I dont care about how loud it is; in fact I like em loud. I was thinking of going with Alba but am not sure. Where can I find the best price for the pipe?
Is there anything else you guys would suggest I do to it before taking it out? Nothing major, just bolt on for now. I'll probably send the motor out to be modded around Christmas. Is there anything I should know regarding the Raptor? The only quad I have owned was a 97 Banshee that I only had for about 2 months before going back to bikes. Thanks in advance.

You might want to check out this pipe shootout for the Raptor from Dirt Wheels:

well, if you like loud than you'll definitely love the alba pipe..plus I heard you can get a really good deal from alba. I'm not exactly sure about the price, but I heard you can get a whole exhaust system, plus the adapter plate with K&N for a pretty decent price....A lot of people are also very happy with their Sparks X-6 system....I hear it puts out pretty good power and is pretty loud as well....check out the alba website though..you might be able to find that deal I was talking about..

Yeah, dirtwheels did a good comparison between pipes. I think CT put out the most horsepower at like 48 or 49 HP at around 6800RPM. Don't forget to jet and filter it. You might want to change your gearing to, depending on riding. If you are riding mostly wide open trails, the stock might be okay. But with a pipe and jet mods, dropping one tooth in the front and maybe one or two in the rear will give you bottom end without sacrificing too much top. Bolt on stuff, I suggest handlebars, bumper, nerfs, front suspension. A shifter is a good idea also because the linkage type blows, and of course full skids. If you have the money, widen it, even an extra four inches makes a big difference as they are narrow and tall.

A lot of guys are running the Yoshi and like it a lot. I just removed my airbox lid and installed a GYTR jet kit and it feels like I added another motor. Before you go moding the engine, I would invest in new a-arms shocks and maybe an axle. From my experience, if you mod the Raptor much more than pipe and jet, the suspension can't handle it and your new found power will be useless.

I had no idea it was done at CT's shop. How did you come across that information? I wouldn't doubt it, however, dirtwheels has always been biased to some degree, especially when it comes to who's advertising or helping out around the dirtwheels garage. I like ATVSport. They are mostly objective and have lots of good race coverage and how to articles.

You'll be happy with the stage 3 Alba kit. For a piped and jetted Raptor it will work great. It has lots of low and mid range power increase. With the open end cap you should get better top end as well but there are better pipes out there for top end performance. It's no slouch though.
