Grizzly 660 technical questions
#1
I checked oil in my 6 hour old Grizzly and it looked kinda muddy, not like an Irish Cream, but not clear. So I changed it with Valvoline 10W40 and now it is nice and clear for the last 3 days. My question is: was it some special "break in" oil that was supposed to be like that, or I did the right thing by changing it?
For some reason when I put it in Low Range orange "L" light blinks on and off, however it runs and engages fine, so is it supposed to blink?
It looks like "Park" position also has a light, but this one does not come on at all when bike is in "P"???
Does anybody know what horsepower / torgue rating is on 660?
Thanks for your help guys!

You may want to do an advanced search under grizzly and oil on this forum because it is quite likely that oil is not right for your engine. If you don't have an owners manual or service cd it may be a good time to get one.

it has to be oil for a wet clutch system, not just regular 10/40. valvoline does make that too though. as for the oil color, i'm sure it was break in oil. it's been a long time since i first changed my oil so i don't remember, but i doubt there was a problem. as for your lights blinking, it should not blink in low, it should just come on steady. also, you should have a light in park. have the dealer check it out. by the way the park light won't come on sometimes unless you rock it, that's normal.

The Oil on my grizzly and two others were like this, i think it's just the assy' lube they use. Are you running Valvoline ATV 10w40? If you're just using an automotive oil in your grizz, DUMP IT! It'll cause clutch problems in a short amount of time. (yes, they grizzly has a clutch) I'm running Amsoil synthetic in both my quads now, it's about the best thing i have ever done to them, i wouldn't do it until you pickup some miles on your quad, but it might be worth looking into. As for the Low range, does it blink the whole time you're in low? or is it just when you engage? it may be the linkage to the shifter needs to be adjusted if it's hard to find the "LOW" light. this would also explain your "PARK" light. if you put it into park and rock the bike does the "P" light come on? You may want to take it back to the dealer and make sure everything is adjusted right and in top shape. I have the service manual in PDF format, roughly 13MB i can email it to you if you want it...

Is the part labeled #1 driven off of the crank?
And part #2 rides inside of #1? Both of these are wet?

Thank you guys for your help.
Grizzly does not have clutch discs, I think it has a centrifugal clutch so oil should not matter to it that much. Nevertheless I will change oil to Yamaha recommended today to make sure.

Yes, it is a wet centrifugal automatic... automotive oils with additives will basically glaze the clutch and cause slipping and then excessive wear. part #2 is off the crank and #1 goes to the primary sheave assy'... It's located inside the engine case behind the belt drive system.

He's right. There is a wet clutch on the Grizz 660, there is also a centrifugal clutch with weights. Do not use any oil that is not rated for a wet clutch. Usually you have to use factory oil or some kind of aftermarket motorcycle oil.
The shifting linkage is either out of adjustment or the linkage sensor is acting up. Either way have the dealer fix it while it's new.
You will quickly learn that the 660 runs very hot all the time. We have removed the thermostat, removed the side panels, hotwired the fan switch, and everything else you can think of. One of the best remedies yet is Liquid Ice. It's at the Yamaha dealer. Drain and replace your antifreeze with this purple stuff, it really works. High Lifter is supposed to be coming out with a larger replacement radiator.

Thank you for you excellent suggestions. It seemed little odd that after 5 minutes of idling my Grizzly would kick in cooling fan... now I know why. I will replace cooling fluid and pull side panels off, maybe even order 2004 style panels with large openings. All the lights started to work now, after riding it for few miles in mud and shifting about 50 times back and forward At one point though, neutral light went away and stopped working as well as electric start without pushing the brake (like it should on neutral), but after half an hour it came back. I guess it was just water, or mud somewhere.
