I make a tin foil funnel between the case drain and the belly pan skid - helps reduce clean-up.

Never cleaned the screen - I think it's time to check that out !

 

Buy youself a Scott Performance stainless filter and never have to buy another filter again.

 

Whenever I tried to use a torque wrench on my tank bolt I could never get it to go to the torque setting without feeling like it was going to strip, so I just snug 'er up and call 'er good. Haven't had any problems so far.

 

Funny that this topic comes up at this time, I just changed my oil on Friday.
While riding at St. Anthony dunes Sunday, I noticed drops of oil leaking on my frame under my oil tank, and my drain plug bolt was wet.
Just for safety, I removed my oil tank tonight to check if I had the dreaded "cracking" that happens to so many of us.
The tank looked fine, no problems.
Turns out, the aluminum drain plug gasket between the plug and the tank was pitted badly. I filed it smooth and re-installed the everything.
So far, so good.
Boy, is that tank thin though. I can see why it is so easy to break.

 

I do the filter every other oil change.. Try cutting the top off a gallon plastic milk jug, leave the lid on.Wedge it into the frame under the oil tank. When you pull the plug, the stream goes straight down. Cut jug as tall as possable, you have to squeeze it a bit to get it back out. Cleanest way to drain the gear box is put right side front and back wheels on 2 4 X4 wood blocks or a couple of bricks. This tilts the whole bike to the side with the drain plug on it. Instructions say to remove the engine skid plate to drain oil. Easier way....>>There is a hole in the engine skid plate to drain the oil through, Grab a hand full of paper towels and stuff them in between the engine case and the skid plate surrounding the hole you can make sort of a dam. Even if you sort of miss the hole the oil won't run all over the under the engine.. Sounds sort of complicated and you can make a real mess. Not too bad after the second or third time though.

 

Use a long automotive style transmission funnel to refill your oil tank. It fits in nicely and you don't have to worry about spilling oil all over when filling.

I've seen the Scott's filter advertised in the back of many dirtwheels magazines, including the last one...If you have a copy of it, check near the back, its in black & white...

 

One tip: In order to avoid getting oil on the frame, I took an old antifreeze jug and cut it about four inches from the base creating a small drain jug. I then cut a hole in one corner. This creates a horizontal funnel if you will, to drain the oil into a pan under the bike. This can be used when draining the oil tank.
