really depends on what you want to do.. the 400EX would make an awesome quad to start with as would many others.. i started on 200x three wheelers then moved to the 250R three wheeler then a 250R 4 wheeler then a raptor...

I would suggest as a minimum the z400 or the Kawasaki/Arctic Cat equivalent. You are big enough to handle any sport quad out there and have a young enough body to take a hit if you get thrown off of one. I dont believe you want an "intermediate" sport quad. Get something you will be satisfied with for many years, its cheaper in the long run. If you like 4 stroke power, the Raptor, yzf450, or even wait till honda comes out with their 450. Cant say much about the Honda 450 except the motor is awesome in the dirt bike version. I have heard many good things about the Polaris 500 but havent ridden one. If I was looking for 2 stroke power, I would try and find a 250R only ridden to church on sunday. But since that doesnt exist, the banshee is an excellent choice, although very narrow power band.
Limited budget, get a 2002 (at the earliest) Raptor. Good luck.

I started off in a 420-450cc (dont remember) banshee. I was 16-17 and had NEVER ridden any quad before. Sold the banshee 2 weeks later and didnt ride any more for 4yrs, when I bought my raptor.

Well when I was REALLY little I had a suzuki 50 fourwheeler.. (Dont recomend for your age and size). Moved up to a 250x that I got from my dad and now I have a drag banshee.. I suggest for you a z400 or 400ex... Both are electical start so the kick start wouldnt wear you out, and I belive both have reverse.. Both are good for mx and trail ridding, but I belive the z400 would win in fastes w mods.. so thats my 2 cents

I started riding back in '88 with a brand new Warrior....the Warrior didn't last long because of my inexperience. I abused it to the point of breaking many things, including my bones. But it was a great quad to gain experience on...And as with many things in life...you never forget your first....Now its all about bringing on the Raptor.....

Well I started out with a Moto 4 wayyyyyyyyy long time ago, Got a Polaris 250 Trailblazer traded stright up for a Yamaha Warrior then just got a 01 Raptor 3 months ago. I wish i would have started out with the raptor but it wasnt out at time. Its a little wheelie happy but its best all around quad IMO. But if you really want to start slow the 400ex is a great choice very upgradable, but no reverse.
