HMF pipe question
#1
Does the Quiet Core also serve as a spark arrestor?
I don't see any way to use both. It doesn't make any sense to have to take out the quiet core in order to use the spark arrestor.
I really doesn't specify on HMF's web site and I haven't heard back yet from an email I sent.

They are two seperate pieces. THe Spark arrestor is a very small piece that fits in with or without the quiet core. I think if you buy the quiet core from HMF you get a spark arrestor freee. I found the best results calling HMF..
Here is the HMF breakdown of the quiet core....

The spark arrestor is a small screen that attaches with the endcap. It can be used with or without the quiet core and comes standard with the pipe regardless of whether or not you order the quiet core.

I wonder if there is a machining problem with this particular piece.
The turn down end is completely flat on the inside and on the pipe end, it is only recessed enough for the Quiet Core or Spark arrestor, not both (like the picture shows). If you try to stack both of them, the turn down won't fit in it's recess on the end of the silencer.
I haven't heard back from HMF yet, I think I'll try and give them a call.

Just got off the phone with HMF. I'm definitely not happy with the answer I got.
First, the Quiet Core is NOT a spark arrestor (like you guys suggested).
They said that if you want to use both, to stack them and tighten the end piece on anyway. It leaves a gap, that in my opinion, is going to let water in. They should have made the machined recess on the silencer end the thickness of both the Quiet Core flange and the spark arresor flange. Then, include a spacer to take up the extra space if only one or the other is being used. I told the Rep this and she said that it is going to be re-disigned down the road. She said that not that many people were using the spark arrestor if using the Quiet Core. I find that hard to believe.
Are the majority of you guys out there riding in the woods, using spark arrestors (whether mandated or not)?

I had the same problem you did. I purchased my HMF froma board member and I later purchased the quiet core and the spark arrestor because it was waaaaay too loud without it. All you have to do is snip out the screen and discard of the round circular piece attatched to it. Install the quiet core and place the screen on the end then bolt down your end cap.
Don't worry it won't fall out. Give it a try it'll be fine.

yamamayzf1000r- I'm going to call them back and tell them I want the end cap machined to take up the ring on the spark arrestor. It doesn't make any sense at all to have it mated up the way they do. If you want the Quiet Core (Quiet... and that's a stretch), then you most likely are not on a wide open track. So, you are most likely riding in the woods. If you're riding in the woods, you should be using a spark arrestor. My receipt actually has the quiet core listed as "Hunter Quiet Core". Ok, once again...if you're hunting, you're in the woods and should be using the spark arrestor.
I'll definitely go your route if I don't get anywhere with HMF. I was wondering if that screen would stay put without the ring.

Have you tried running it without the baflle yet. I did, I couldn't believe how loud this thing was. I had 6 of my neighbors rush outside to find out what the heck as going on.
The HMF system is a great set up. I lost very little down low and gained an unbeleivable amount from mid all the way to redline, very satisfied.

I'm still in the jetting stages. I also put a Noss Super Flow w/ Uni on at the same time. My Wolv had a 141.3 M.J. stock and I was only able to find a 145 the first go around. The 145 was lean according to the plug. I found a 150 and put it in tonight, but was unable to test. I'll break out the numbered drills next, if I still have to adjust from here.
I'm pretty new to the ATV's and was surprised how loud my Wolv 350 was without the Q Core. I must admit, I expected it to be a lot quieter than it is with the Q Core. It does sound good though. My kids really like it!
I'll let you know what HMF says on Monday.
