Yamaha 350 2 stroke street bike
#1
So I'm stuck in traffic when I look over and see the motor that I so familar with on a street bike.
I hear there is a 400 2-stroke streek bike too. I am told that these bikes have the exhaust valves. I always wondered why doesn't the banshee have an exhaust valve. I had a Kaw Tecate 3-wheeler with one and it was bad O.

That would probably be a RZ 350, the RZ is where the Banshee gained it's powerplant, less the powervalves. KiwiCraig has had a hand in some RZ top-end conversions to get the powervalves back. There were also RD350, 400's and 500's, but they were air-cooled and slightly different configuration( V 4 cyl. 500 cc).

Guys
one of my favourite subjects, the RZ 350 topend bolts straight onto the Banshee, the powervalves are electrically actuated by a servo connected to the CDI. These engines produce significantly more midrange torque and easily out HP a Banshee. Yamaha where just be plain cheap leaving the powervalves off of the Banshee..........
see articles on my page at:
http://homepages.ihug.co.nz/~crainic/INDEX.htm
go down about half way on the index page to find the links to the RZ Banshee
Eric Happy at 4 wheel Thunder and Vito's are assembling a full spec RZ Banshee, Eric will be running it up on his Dyno in about 4 weeks time all going to plan.
Check out Eric's place at:

head to the bottom of the page and check out his dyno runs on various quads........

Dam that seem to be the upgrade? So you says its possible to go to the dealer by the jugs, bolt it on the banshee, plug it into the CDI? Will the head, carbs and pipes (FMF/T5) bolt on too? I haven't heard anyone else talk about it. Is this an ancient Japanese secret. If this is the case that were I'm going next rebuild.
Thanks!
Thanks!

You need the RZ CDI, and no the pipes will not bolt on. The RZ has a different flange than the Banshee. If it was as easy as some say, everybody would do it. The RZ makes about 59 HP stock. It also has alot more cooling capacity in the cylinders. However, the RZ stuff is getting hard to come by. If you get your stock cylinders ported properly, you will have the equivlent of the RZ, without the powervalve headaches. Remember, the YPVS on the RZ is an early design. The new Yamaha YPVS on there snowmobile is much improved and uses microprocessors to control them. The RZ uses a very simple CDI controlled unit. What I am saying is, don't waste your time and money just trying to be different. Get a good port job, and you are done. However, if you want to have the thrill of your Banshee on the street, go find yourself an RZ and ride it on the street. People look at you like you are nuts, they are so damn loud. Later. Have fun.

Uh-Oh, the debates starts again....KiwiCraig and I had a good discussion about this about 6 or 8 months ago......I've got two RZ heads for sale if anyone is interested, one is in perfect shape, the other has had the machining process started to modify it. The squish band recess has been machined off and the pockets need re-cut. Email me.
The TZ750 was one of the greatest motors. Very potent. Very expensive and hard to find. Bring the wheelbarrow full of cash...that is if you can find one.....The theory was, forget about handling and finesse like the Honda GP bikes, just out HP them in the straights....

Common mod, you mean because you haven't seen or ridden one it's no good.......!! Dean Sundahl ran one for years and won a pile of Desert races in the process......... yes RZ's are rare in the US and most people who are supposed Banshee experts don't even know what one is...........
the RZ banshee engine setup is a very common mod in NZ, several top atv racers run this setup and it is as reliable as a rock and you better believe it, pisses over any non powervalve Banshee porting setup, they've tried expensive cylinder from all the good companies, the truth is that an RZ setup out torques em in the midrange whilst matching them on top end everytime and is way cheaper down under than those expensive US setups, a better mouse trap, you bet.........
Yes this stuff is getting old, but then the banshee cylinder design dates back to the early 80's................. hardly modern........
Not relable, hmmmmm, no one I know has had a problem with the powervalves, they are quite simple and very effective. Microprocessor control, so what's new......, the power valves are signalled to start to open at 5500 RPM and be fully open at 6000rpm, this conincided with the peak torque RPM with the valves down VS loss of HP if they stayed closed, ie above 6000. Aftermarket controllers are available from the UK which enable you to dail up or down the valve opening time, again nothing new in the road racing circles for the RZ's.........
Pipes WILL fit on, you have to make a SIMPLE bolt on stub for the pipes to spigot over as per the stock banshee setup.
Yes it takes a bit of work but the results will speak for themselves, MIDRANGE TORQUE and TOPEND HP.........
I quess the truth will come out when we get the comparative dyno runs all sorted in about 4 weeks time............
